Apple VisionPro - some thoughts

Wow! Almost a month since I started to comment on this and only now do I have some free time to actually finish my comments 😂.OK, I am an Apple fan. I've gotten a bit more critical over the years, but I still like their products (more or less).  I think VisionPro (AVP) is a bit rushed to market.  No one is saying the β word, and people are treating this as the product, but I honestly

Copland Tethered

Another fun Copland discovery.  I've always wanted to run Copland in an emulator, even since I found a copy on a Caraccho server back in the early 2000s, but according to the details, you always needed a debug machine to have your Copland machine tethered to because it was so unstable. It's interesting to live vicariously through others who played with this ;-)

Computer Chronicles - MacOS Copland

I remember the Computer Chronicles on my local PBS station.Pretty cool to discover some of these old Copland Demos (even though Apple totally botched that potential future). In some alternate universe, Copland forms the basis for MacOS X 😅

Long term support...

Here's another Reddit find in the r/vintagecomputing subreddit.  What if MacOS had support for Vintage (aka obsolete) Mac hardware, such as the Mac Plus?  It might look a  little something like this! It's always fun to look a bit at the alt-history of computing :-). I wonder what the MacOS would have looked like today if Apple had retained the Platinum look!

Apple IIe cards for the Mac

Every so often you come across something on the web that you had heard of in the past, but never seen!  In this case, for me, it's the Apple IIe compatibility card. This is something that was "new" when I was in high school, but I don't think we ever had them in our computer labs. The Apple IIe Card had a 65C02 processor, 256K memory, and a port for supporting a 5 1/4-inch Apple II floppy drive

A/UX 2.0 Demonstration

I came across this demo via reddit recently.  Before Apple bought NeXT to bring us OS X, Apple had A/UX (Apple Unix) which ran on classic macs (I think before System 7).  In my early days on the Internet I came across A/UX 3.0 installation discs (which I am pretty sure I've backed up somewhere).  I wonder if I can get a Basilisk instance of this running...

Back on the Mac!

Well, to be fair, I was never gone, but my "daily driver" for the past 3 years (during the early days of COVID) has been an aging Dell Optiplex 9010, which was a hand-me-down. When my work-issued Surface Pro 3 died an untimely death in 2017 (and wasn't replaced), I refurbished the Optiplex which I had saved in our equipment closet for just such an emergency occasion. The original use case was

Review: Dogfight: How Apple and Google Went to War and Started a Revolution

Dogfight: How Apple and Google Went to War and Started a Revolution by Fred Vogelstein My rating: 3 of 5 stars Not a bad book.  Having just finished "The One Device: The Secret History of the iPhone" which only deals with the development of the iPhone, this book was both shorter and covered both Apple and Google.  As such, I think this book plays a

The MacPocket

Another concept from Reddit (or somewhere).  This one is a PDA version of the Mac, if done in 1984. I love the QWERTY keyboard and the trackball.  Reminds me a lot of Apple x Blackberry. The battery would probably need to be huge...

The MacPhone

I came across this concept on Reddit (I think) a while back.  It's basically a "what if" Apple had made some sort of phone out of MacOS back in the day of the Mac Plus. Fun concept to play around with, but I really doubt that the size would be that small.  The battery alone would probably require a backpack.
