Family Guy + Windows 7 = Very Funny!

I was browsing my RSS feeds over the long thanksgiving weekend and I came across some Windows 7-Family Guy crossovers. They were quite funny! Have a look (if you haven't already seen them that is)

What happened to Second Life?

I saw on article on the BBC the other day and I was surprised at people being surprised at Second Life because it seems like such a "d'uh" type of thing to anyone who's ever used Second Life!

The problem with Second Life, as I've written (or probably just said) countless times are:

  1. Crazy requirements for your computer. Nothing is going to take off if the requirements for use are insane!

  2. Graphics stink - seriously! Unless you're on a great computer with a great internet connection

  3. The learning curve is HUGE

  4. There isn't really much to do on there. I know that people get on there to chat, but I would rather have my real life body lounging than have my avatar lounge.

  5. Spending real money to get stuff that disappears? No way!

  6. For developers you are depending on LindenLabs for everything - no self hosting

  7. For developers - No offline development

Quite honestly, Second Life is a great concept but it's a solution in need of a problem. I can see some great pedagogical applications for SL, but the way it's implemented now, it's not all that useful, other than the occasional voyeur or experimenter lurking.

Against non-latin domain names

Well, this past week Egypt launched the .masr domain name, but it's not just masr (Egypt in arabic), it's .مصر (masr in arabic script). Now many proponents or unicode domains would probably say that it democratizes the internet, making it less of an English centric place, however I really don't see it that way. Now luckily I can type in a couple of different scripts so something like .εργασία or .бизнес or even .わぷろ wouldn't cause me much trouble. But what about other people? Everyone is used to the latin alphabet (through one way or another) not matter what their native language is. The same can't be said about other scripts.

Now some people may say that since you can't read the script, what do you care about it anyway? To those people I say two word: machine translation! Machine translation of text isn't all that great, but it goes get the meaning across. Of course, you need to be able to type in the darned URL to be able to get a machine translated version of the text at a particular site.

The thing that I find most baffling is that one of the spokes people said "It is a great moment for us... The internet now speaks Arabic" (see BBC article). I've got news for you - the internet has been speaking Arabic, and Greek and Hebrew and Chinese and...a whole bunch of other languages for a long, long time This isn't a new phenomenon brought on by this new web domain. I dislike spinsters :-)

PXP-2k! Everyone loves a good KiRF!

So what's better than jailbreaking your PSP or iPhone to play games under emulation? Why, getting a KiRF of course!

I did not know that KiRFs got unboxing videos - but anyway - enjoy!

Weird Al Explains Autotune

What do you do when you're not feeling all that great? You watch television! (or sleep) Well, in the age of the internet, we've also got silly little videos on YouTube. I can't remember where I came across this video, but I did indeed see it, and I had a good chuckle with it. What do they say? Laughter is the best medicine? I hope this works ;-)

Careful who you email...

Well, happy Friday to you all!

Here's a news story from Inside Higher Ed. Long story short - two Cornell University employees are having an affair with each other and send each other naughty emails. They are both married to other people. Well, one of those emails got sent to the universal directory - everyone in the university!

Man, that's got to be embarrassing! I mean people feel sheepish when they send the wrong email to the wrong recipient, but this is a big "wow!" On the bright side, I am pretty sure that many fellow university employees go a good kick from reading these private naughty emails and it probably made the day go faster :-)

If you are interested in reading those emails - click here. Here are photos of the perps - of course in their defense, employment profile photos are generally bad.

24 - Season 8 Trailer

I was kinda wondering what the heck writers had in store for poor ol' Jack Bauer. I mean after 7 seasons, some very hellish days, probably a year or so of torture at the hands of the Chinese, some crazy stuff happening over in Africa...how much more can this man endure?

Luckily it turns out that Jack is retired...but he's still dragged (kicking and screaming?) into saving the world. I look forward to season 8 (if for no other reason to see someone else become the head butt-kicker, Jack really needs a nice long vacation somewhere where things don't explode or die)

Matrix - Chaplin style

Speaking of the Matrix, I came across this video through Pestaola.gr a week or two ago. I don't know if this is an actual Charle Chaplin film, or if it's been made to look like one - but it's a retro reimagining of the Matrix. How would the matrix have looked like if it was shot during the era of the silent film? Well have a look :-) (very entertaining if you are into silent cinema)

N900 ad - and the matrix

A week (or two?) ago Engadget had a new ad for the Nokia N900, and they had a light tongue and cheek comment about the ad hinting toward mental illness. I had a different take on the ad. The whole aesthetic of the ad reminds me of the original matrix (crossed perhaps with the Australian show the hollowmen). I expected agent Smith to make the focus group participants lose their mouth of something :-)
