Priest, the movie: it was...OK

I took the opportunity this week to watch Priest, a movie that I had anticipated but never watched in the theaters. I've read most of the manga (save the last book) and I can say that the movie is not faithful to the manga (despite not remembering much of the story, I could remember that much!).  The movie did stand on its own (at least as an action film), and the character of Black Hat (Carl Urban) was an interesting addition to the story.

So what was interesting about the story? The post-apocalyptic Judge Dreadd-like universe (but instead of "the law" you had church law). The idea of vampires being sightless, and since they have no eyes they have no soul (according to the church propaganda in the movie) and the whole ninja-assassin priest order that's created to kill vampires (reminds me of the Iskariot order in Hellsing).

What stinks in the movie? The characters seem to fall a little flat (especially Black Hat), it's all action and not a ton of depth (other than what you read into it) and the movie was built more (it seems to me) as a springboard for more movies rather than a good movie on its own that spawns sequels.  Well, let's see if Priest 2 is any better...

Fable III done...a bit anti-climactic...

This past weekend I finished off Fable III.  All things considered it was an interesting button smashing game, but the ending was a but anti-climactic.  I ended up being able to save the kingdom, but there were a lot of casualties because I decided to keep most of my promises and I ended up coming up on the side of Good. If anything in this game, you learn that you cannot please everyone (and sometimes you need to go back on your promises for the greater good).

As far as achievements go, my collection is quite meager. I think I only got 16% of achievements since I didn't do all the side quests or get married or have any progeny. The game made it a bit pedantic to court people, so I didn't want to waste my gaming time courting virtual people (despite the achievements).

Now I see that Fable II is only $5 used at gamestop. I wonder if I should give that a try lol.

tapose - Metro tablet on the iPad

Microsoft may have killed its double screen tablet before it even got off the ground, but some enterprising folks have brought the concept to the iPad.  This is pretty interesting. It reminds me a lot of the concept of smart object/plug-in architecture that they were going to do in the original MacOS 8 (copland) but the project was eventually a failure.

CIA: Operation Ajax - interesting comic book!

This is a pretty interesting comic book (based on real events).  This is so nicely done that others need to pay attention to it!  It really showcases what you can do when you really utilize the medium you have to work with and break out of existing constraints (that are not necessarily your current medium's constraint)

Think of the children!!!

Yesterday I decided to play a bit of Fable III so I can move the story along. I had gotten to the revolution part where I depose my evil older brother Logan...but I guess the joke was on me since Theresa (the spirit that came to my character and said I'd be a hero) had also advised him that the great darkness is coming to Albion. He could have been a benevolent rules but had a greater chance of being pummeled by the evil forces; or he could be an asshole tyrant but be able to save the kingdom. He obviously went the tyrant route, now which way would my character go? Hmmmm

First issue? Tax policy. I expected to be able to set the tax rate, but instead I could lower taxes (which would empty the royal treasury) or keep taxes the same which would give more money to defend the kingdom. FAIL... Oh well decided to go the responsible route and not have famine in the kingdom, so I empties the treasury.

Next issue: factories: ye to child labor or no? In an attempt to balance the budget I approved child labor (wish I had the ability to set up OSHA but I didn't) lost some political points there, but got some money.

Next issue: homelessness and rebuilding after the battle. For God's sake! I can be unpopular and have people homeless, or I can save them from homelessness and run a major deficit (around 650,000 gold at this point in the game). Well, I decided on social welfare over fiscal policy. After all, a rebuilt city SHOULD bring in revenue and soldiers. I also felt bad for approving child labor and bot providing for their education - at the very least they could have a home.

I spared my brother (like had all my previous defeated foes) so I have some army.

Now the hero has 330 days to venture into aurora, battle some evil beings and find the stash of gems that MIGHT finance the defense of the kingdom from these evil black goo and shadow things.

This game was much more fun as a button-mashing "bet em over the head with a stick" game lol. Now I really have to save the kingdom lol.

Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol... Can't wait!

I can't wait for this weekend, Mission Impossible in IMAX goodness!  OK. It is quite possible that this film may suck big time but I am a big fan of the series.  I used to watch the television version with Theo Penglis when I was in Greece and I have seen the other 3 previous films a few times. Back in high school my computer science 101 final project was to program the interface seen at the beginning of each (TV) episode where Mr. Phelps gets his mission orders, complete with a midi version of the theme song and low-res graphics, programmed on an Apple IIgs and Apple BASIC. Those were the idays :-)

Thoughts on the new xbox interface

When I came home yesterday I fired up my xbox 360 to get the new OS update that gives me the Metro style UI. In the grand scheme of things I do like it. I think it's high time that Microsoft looked at its product offerings and designed some consistency (or at least a common theme) across its services. The desktop and Window metaphor is getting a bit stale - it's still useful, but not in all contexts (remember Windows CE and Windows Mobile?)

In any case, there were a few things that were a bit of a #fail for me. Social media is prominent now in in the xbox interface. It was there before, but the social media apps were not easily seen. This isn't the fail moment. The fail is that you need a microsoft xbox live gold subscription in order to access them.  Seriously? If I want to post or read my facebook and twitter feeds I need to pay you a service fee? I already pay my internet provide thank-you-very-much! I don't need to pay microsoft another $70/year for the privilege.  This seems like a missed opportunity for microsoft to have their achievements auto-posted as they get them and indicate to people that users are indeed using THEIR product.

The other fail is that media apps (like hulu and netflix) are now more prominently shown. Again, this wouldn't be a fail if it weren't for the fact that I need xbox live gold in order to access these features! I mean, I do pay netflix for the ability to view films, why then do I need to pay microsoft an additional fee to have access to these films on my console?  Hulu is a bit more annoying in that it's free on a computer with a browser (ad supported, with premium content for subscription) but on xbox (and iPads for that matter) I need to pay a monthly fee to access hulu on my devices. This wouldn't be much of an issue if it weren't for the fact that hulu still serves ads even when you pay them!  Speaking of ads, microsoft is taking one (small) tile from each screen and using it as an ad space...major fail! I wonder if these go away if you pay the $70 per year for gold...

OK, I got off on a bit of a tangent there.  All things considered, the new interface is great that blemished by some unfortunate money making schemes...
