Olympics...m'eh...
Monday, Jul 30 2012, 22:28 athletics, Entertainment, FAIL, Television Permalink When I was a kid, every two years (once for the winter Olympics and once for the summer Olympics) my grandfather would drive us to Ancient Olympia, about 30 or so minutes from where we lived, to witness the lighting of torch ceremony. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was a rather huge privilege to be able to witness this so often, and to be able to visit these archeological sites with th frequency that I had.
When I moved back to the US I attempted to watch the Atlanta Olympics. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't glued to the TV. There was still something about being in Ancient Olympia tha I missed. I made an attempt to watch th Athens Olympics, but at that point the info was on the net, so why bother? Time delay, taped broadcasts seemed outmoded. At that point I missed my time Greece, so I had much more incentive to watch, but I didn't.
I've missed other Olympics too, but these Olympics just seem scammy, corporate sponsored and grimey. In this day and age, with live streaming and the internet no one likes tape recorded games. You don't want to stop using the net just because you might get spoilers. I am also taking issue with professional atheletes and the Olympics. I guess I still ascribe to that whole "amateur athlete" thing, which I guess is no longer the case and hasn't been for a while. I am sorry Olympics, but the IOC is corrupt, money, sponsorships and primetime ads have been the center of these Olympics, and quite a few that passed us by. It's no wonder we keep seeing #NBCfail on twitter and #olympicFail.
Sad to see the spirit of the Olympics dead and rotting every 2 years.

L.A. Noire | Done!
Friday, Jul 20 2012, 09:24 Entertainment, Games, VideoGames, XBOX PermalinkMan, that was a lengthy game! I guess any open world game, such as L.A. Noire, is bound to be lengthy since you have the ability to explore the world at your own leisure. This game was getting a lot of 5-star ratings, which is why I decided to play it (the star studded cast was also another major motivator). Having played and finished the game I think that it is indeed a 5-star game! (now, where is the sequel? ;-) )
In terms of just plain-ol' metrics, I finished the game with 24 our of 40 achievements; more than 50% ain't bad, but I would have loved to have had at least 30 of them, maybe on the second time around? ;-). There were a few achievements that I guess I could have gotten had I played my cards right from the start. For example

There were a few achievements that I guess I could have gotten had I played my cards right from the start. For example
- I got 12/13 newspapers (must have missed one early on),
- I solved 30/40 street crimes (I meant to do all of them, but once I got to Arson Squad, case #3, I stopped seeing them. I guess more exploration of the map)
- I got 46/96 cars (this was the least enjoyable since I got in and out of other people's cars. I know that as a cop I could commandeer a car, but it just felt weird to do so.)
- I leveled to level 18.5. I think I could have made it to 20 if I did a few things differently.
- I don't even remember how many monuments I discovered...
Some general observations from my personal game play:
- I always thought that in shoot-em-up or hack-n-slash games I was pretty good even when I as tired. When I was playing L.A. Noire however I sucked at it when I was tired. I was much more accident prone, much more prone to crash into something, or run over a pedestrian.
- The pedestrian AI is either stupid, or humans don't operate well under surprise (which I could believe). When I had my sirens on, people, like deer in headlights, still tried to cross the crosswalks, even though they were on the sidewalk to begin with!
- Destruction of city property and bodily injury was kinda cheap (all things considered). Both when i was tired and when I was not, I had some major wrecks (and human injury) when I was going from scene to scene and chasing bad guys. The money paid at the end of the stage/case was pretty small (even adjusted for inflation)
- There were quite a few moments of fiero while playing this game. The most recent moment of Fiero is when I finally go "meritorious" (5 star) rating when I completed a case (most of my cases were 4 starts (distinguished), and a few were 3 stars.
- I caused more damage while chasing (with a car) suspects and bad guys than being chased! Amazingly when I was trying to dodge the mob guys (as Jack), and I was driving quickly through alleys and main streets, I ran into NOTHING. Contrast this to when I was chasing others, where I was driving into mailboxes and street poles, and scraping other cars. weird!
And finally, the ending. Nice story, but WTF?!?!?! They killed Phelps...not sure I like this ending.
All things considered, really nice game!
Now...what's next?

Adieu Spool
Sunday, Jul 15 2012, 14:42 adieu, Technology, web 2.0 Permalink Well, that was a bit short lived! Just last week I was pondering how much longer Instapaper will be a paid app given that apps and services, among them Spool, we're available for free. Well, spool is now gone into the graveyard of Web 2.0 apps and services. The nice thing about spool was that you could save multimedia for late viewing, not just text. I hope other services jump on the multimedia time shifting bandwagon soon.
This is what I got from Spool announcing the closure of th service:
This is what I got from Spool announcing the closure of th service:
Dear Spooler,
We’re writing to inform you that Spool has shut down. Your bookmarks are attached to this email. If you’d like to import these bookmarks into your browser or another service, please visit http://blog.getspool.com/instructions/ .
Thank you for using Spool and providing feedback during our beta period. It’s been a pleasure to build Spool for you and we’ve been flattered with the overwhelmingly positive feedback we’ve received. However, after careful consideration, we’ve decided to pursue our vision in a new way. You’ll soon be able to read details on our blog at http://blog.getspool.com
Thank you again for your support,

Podcast app στο iOS: Nice try, try again

Ο θάνατος του Social Bookmarking;
Οπότε, δεν με βλέπω να χρησιμοποιώ τα social bookmarking πια. Εσείς τι λέτε; Τι δείχνει η δική σας χρήση των social bookmarking sites;

What's the reason to buy Instapaper?
Tuesday, Jul 10 2012, 07:00 Applications, iOS, Opinion, Technology PermalinkI was browsing the AppStore the other day and I saw that Instapaper was cheaper than its normal price
Maybe if this were the original price I would have gone for Instapaper over ReadItLater ;-). In any case, I was in a temptation to buy it! After all, Instapaper was my original "save for later reading" application on iOS, and I only changed to ReaditLater (now Pocket) because there was no free version on the iPad, whereas there was a free version of pocket, and pocket had a smaller price tag for the premium features.
Now the field has changed a bit. Pocket has become free. Spool has emerged as another competitor, and of course there is also readability. All of these options are free. Which makes me wonder, is there a spot for a paid app, like Instapaper, in this field? What would you say to someone who was interested in getting a "read this later" app for their smartphone or tablet? How would you convince them to go with the paid Instapaper, versus the free Pocket, Readability and Spool?

Adieu, Mediafly onair
Monday, Jul 9 2012, 07:00 adieu, Podcast, Technology, web 2.0 Permalink My weekend Web 2.0 cleanup yielded another service that apparently went belly up over the past six months. Mediafly still exists, but they are focusing their work on the Enterprise and not on the consumer. I wonder if they will go the way of Britekite due to this restructuring.
In any case, mediafly onair was a way to subscribe to your favorite podcasts using a web interface and then access that list on your device. Many services were supported including iOS, Android, Roku and Google TV. This, for me, solved the problem of knowing when a podcast had new episodes available without having toe check each podcast individually. Sure, you could use iTunes and sync, but at the time when I was testing this out, I did not have regular access to a computer for this function.
The nice thing about Mediafly is that it let me know when there were new shows. The bad thing was that (1) downloaded podcasts never went to the regular Music container area for iOS (so the Music app could not access these files). The files were stored in the Mediafly sandbox, so they could only be played with mediafly. This was a bit of a fail. (2) The second issue was that the headphone controls never worked for this app - so what ended up happening was that I needed to pull out my iPod everytime I needed to pause/play. If I forgot myself and tried to pause a podcast playing in Mediafly, iTunes would kick in - very annoying.
In any case, seems like mediafly just got out of that game - so...arrivederci it is then :-)
