Star Trek Renegades, episode 1 is out!

After the long wait, the first episode of Star Trek Renegades is out!  Since it's an hour and a half pilot it should probably be considered episodes 1 and 2, but whatever :-)  I originally expected this to be out last December, but it seems that the deadlines kept falling back.

I actually have not seen the finished episode yet.  I was a backer of the project so I got a link to the pre-final version where some of the vFX needed to still be worked on, but the plot was obviously there, so I had a chance to see it before it became public on youtube.  I've been waiting a while to comment on it because I didn't want to spoil it for people who did not get it early, so here is an opportunity!

I would say that the plot is rather interesting but the grittiness seems to cross-over into campy sometimes.  I do like the idea of a more clandestine story to star trek, after all there probably are people that work in the shadows and not everyone in Starfleet is a galactic boyscout, but the execution left something to be desired.  That said, I don't think the film is bad at all - all pilot episodes of Star Trek, even the television produced ones didn't really pique my complete interest in a "OMG this is F8CK!NG amazing" way. The true strength of star trek is story telling and character development, which is really more of a long term game. Pew-pews are nice, but they are not the end-all-be-all of trek (hmm... wonder what a Michael Bay Trek would be like...).

In any case, my big question from this story is this: what's up with the cuneiform writing on that device they found?  I know that this is a language geek thing, but you can't just throw up cuneiform (a very human script) and not explain it.  Perhaps this will be explained in future episodes.

I hope we see more of Corin Nemec in future episodes. I liked him in Stargate SG-1, and I think he makes for a good Starfleet captain. His ship, the USS Archer, was also a pretty nifty federation ship design.

One thing that bugged the hell out of me is the appropriation of the doctor's (from Voyager) mobile holo-emitter for use by this rag-tag crew.  I really like the the character of the doctor, not necessarily Zimmerman - the man who the doctor is modeled on, but the doctor himself.  I think he's proven himself to be a valuable crewmate, as much as any organic lifeforms anyway, and in Voyager I saw the mobile emitter as his property, not the property of Starfleet. So taking it and using it to keep the consciousness of some kid alive, while noble, seems to really dis the doctor.  This is something I'd love to see explained and addressed in a future episode.

Speaking of future episodes, the plan to pitch this to CBS seems to have fallen through.  This wasn't surprising, and it was really predicted by Alec Peters (of Star Trek Axanar) since CBS and Paramount seem to not want trek on TV at the moment (at least a Trek that they fund).  The Renegades crew will be crowdfunding two more episodes, which is pretty nifty. I hope this goes through. It would be great to see a successful crowdfunded web-series of this caliper on the web.

Sev: Andorian Antennae

This week's Sev Trek: Enterforaprize comic tackles the topic of Andorians and their Antennae.  Andorians were actually one of my favorite species, as is evident from my Star Trek Online character who is also an Andorian.I forgot to mention last week that the punchline for all of the Sev comics (from what I remember) was always outsourced. There was a competition each week (or was it every 2 weeks?) where people sent in their submissions.  I think I also sent my own in, but I never got picked :-)

Yes, Metal Gear is odd...

One of my favorite game series is the Metal Gear franchise. Even though I haven't played all games, because some seem to be Playstation Exclusives, like Metal Gear: Solid (PS1) and Metal Gear 4 (PS3), I've played enough to get the gist of the story - which is thoroughly confusing.  Here is a quick recap to help put the story in order for other fans of the franchise.

Nantasket Beach (Hull, MA)

Sev me up!

Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, basically from the time I started browsing the internet in high school and early college, one of the websites that I went to pretty religiously was Sev.com.au, the home of a cartoonist who created comic strips around some popular science fiction shows, including Star Trek.  In the early 2000s I guess he decided to call it quits, but I've recently been salvaging as much as I can, either from the internet archive of sev.com.au (some older strips were behind  a paywall, so not all of them were accessible), and some from star trek blogs who reposted the comics.

I thought I would start archiving them here as well. So, I guess I'll start this series of Sev Trek chronologically with Star Trek: Enterprise, or rather its Sev counterpart enterforaprize.

The characters for this series are:

And, finally, this week's strip:

[Defiance]: The road to Sausolito

Raiders
I've been geeking out a bit on Defiance these past couple of weeks and focusing on getting the main missions completed before moving onto more episode-based missions.  I am currently at an EGO rating of 292; pretty meager when you consider that the max EGO rating is around 6000, but anyway.

Thus far I've completed the Mount Tam missions, where the main antagonists seem to be mutants of various sorts (human mutants and hellbugs).  That terraforming (or was it just arktech gone wrong? I forget) really did wreak some havoc on planet Earth! I've made my way through the Madera missions where the main enemies seemed to be the Raiders (whose outfits remind me a bit of the cover art for Borderlands), and finally I am at the last stage of the Marin story arc which, once complete, will have me at 60% completion of the main story (at least thus far).  The main enemies in the Marin arc are miners that have been enhanced by nanotech implants (and have gone crazy or evil or something). I guess in the world of Defiance everyone is just looking out for their own self interest ;-)

I am currently stuck on the final boss for the Marin arc who answers to the name Jackleg Joe. This uber-miner has a piece of ark-tech that I (and Von Bach) are after, so I guess I need to get to it to progress in the story.  This boss battle seems to be quite the challenge as my usual tactics don't work.  Up to now my main method of attack has been inspired by Grand Theft Auto: get in my vehicle and run over any bugs, mutants, or cyborgs.  Seeing as this is indoors my car refuses to spawn.  My secondary approach, a combination of a grenade launcher and a sniper rifle also don't work well due to the close quarters in the inside.  The grenade launcher is fine, actually, but the cyborgs (aka "jackleg's minions") seem to have a high level of regenerative shielding which requires a lot of simultaneous, point-blank, grenades to go off.  Despite this, I've managed to get several waves into the boss fight, but not that far enough that I get him to come down and face me himself.

In other stages the saving grace is that someone else can jump in on the same mission as you while you're in the middle of the mission and give you a hand.  This doesn't seem to be the case with environments inside, and I am not part of a league.  One thing I've noticed is that the people who've been able to beat this boss are at least EGO level 400, so I may just have to go grind elsewhere (perhaps in some arkfall events) to be able to get enough experience and hit-points to beat this stage. Argh...

The game thus far has been enjoyable. The two biggest issues for me are the choppyness of the video at times, and the fact that there is a serious glitch with climbing ladders.  It seems like ladders are magic warp-zones - as you climb the ladder you start getting displaced on the x-axis, which means that you can get "thrown" away from your target. #facepalm.  This means that I've had to find different ways of getting up tall structures that don't require ladders, or wait for other players who want to play in that zone to be able to make progress.

I wonder how long it will take me to get past Jackleg Joe.  Anyone else play this game?  Thoughts?

Star Trek Online Season 11 (woot!)

Nice!  Season 11 of Star Trek Online has been announced and it's titled New Dawn!

Among the changes, listed on the developer blog:
Along with new lore and story progression in Season 11, Star Trek Online will also be updated with new gameplay options in the form of the Admiralty System. Take command of your inactive starships to complete dangerous assignments and gather exciting rewards, while advancing your influence in the Admiralty campaigns. Within this system, each starship is given special traits and stats that must be used to successfully complete assignments. Plan carefully which ships are sent on which assignment in order to meet their requirements and offset various hazards, in an effort to yield great rewards across any of three separate campaigns.
I am curious to see what this Admiralty system is.  At the moment I am a bit tired of the grind for reputation gear. So tired, in fact, that I haven't gotten any Iconian gear yet.  I have extra marks on my main character and on occasion I do play a queue for marks. However, I've decided to wait for the winter event, raise some epohhs and get some gear that way, if I ever get enough marks.  Grinding away on 4 characters is just insane which trickled down, and makes it tough for even 1 character (given that inventory space for that character is also limited).

Καλοκαιρινό...διάβασμα;

Το πρώτο που άρχισα να διαβάζω ήταν το «Heart of Darkness» του Joseph Conrad.
