Star Trek Renegades (near the end?)
Wednesday, Nov 25 2015, 06:00 crowdfunding, Entertainment, FanFilm, StarTrek, Television PermalinkThe Star Trek: Renegades kickstarter, as of this writing, still has about 10 days to go, and they still need another $100k to raise their minimum goals for creating episode 2. The stretch goal for this, at least the first one, is $600k, which I really doubt that they will make. The first stretch goal means that they will also make episode 3 in this round. While the story of Renegades is interesting, I think that the announcement from the writer (or was it the director) that they weren't going to pursue the original 12-episode plan due to CBS's announcement of a new Star Trek Series in 2017 really hurt the project. I'd much rather have something like the Continuing Mission or New Voyages where we get episodes, even if they are sporadic. Without the guarantee that there will be more, I am wondering why people are donating. That said, I do hope they meet the $600k mark so that they get to make 3 episodes.
One thing I was thinking, before this week, was more in-line of the perks for such kick starters, and I was wondering about kickstater motivation and economics. So, in the first episode I ended up getting one of their unique (and pretty nice) communicator badges. I think this made me a donor after the kickstarter has ended since I get notifications from them. That said, I am wondering what other perks can be made available to those who donate. The video will ultimately be free on the web, so if you prefer to wait, and see it for free eventually, then why donate? Or, rather, why donate more than a cup of coffee? Sure, donors can get a DVD or Blu-ray disc, they can get extra commentary, scripts, and so on, but these are really not for every type of person who might be interested in donating. My thing was the commbadge. What about the newly minted rank insignia - or something else of limited run to entice people (and collectors) to get something that won't be available later?
One of the things that is new, in this kickstarter (but late in the game, it seems), is the perk of having your name and semblance immortalized in a comic (see beneath for a sample). This is pretty cool, but that perk also carries a $300 price-tag...which is a little beyond my scope. For $350 you can get a character in Renegades novels...again - a little beyond my price-range as a fan. I guess what I am wondering is what entices people to donate to something like this when you know that there won't be more episodes in the 'season' format.

Captain Pike (Kickstarter #2)
Tuesday, Nov 17 2015, 04:00 crowdfunding, Entertainment, FanFilm, Films, Sci-Fi, StarTrek, Television PermalinkSeems like Captain Pike is back, with a second kickstarter (or is it an indiegogo campaign?) going to finish off episode 1. It looks quite promising, and it's the second fan film (or independent Star Trek production in case people are offended by the term 'fan film') that takes a character from the original Trek series, that we've seen once on screen, and getting their back story. Wonder how long it will be before we see a realized Captain April series or fan film (Star Trek Begins has been in limbo for a while it seems);-)
The campaign thus far is going well. I've been thinking about supporting it seeing as several actors I like are on it, and it seems like a fun show. The thing that I don't always find appealing with these types of kickstarters are the perks. At this point I am beyond getting a disc with the film on it (gasp! no more discs!), and I know the film is going to hit the web when it's released and I'll get to see it for free on youtube (don't care much for the HD), so what are good perks to get and give in order to encourage higher monetary support (to see this project realized)?
I saw that Renegades had a get a cameo in the books they plan on writing, but those tiers were a little too hefty for my wallet. More on Renegades in another post.

Niiiiiiiiim!
Monday, Nov 16 2015, 04:30 Defiance, Entertainment, Games, MMORPG, Sci-Fi, VideoGames PermalinkI was meaning for that to sound a bit like the iconic "khaaaaaan" yell, but oh well - fell flat a bit. Not talking about Nim Chimpsky here, the famous chimp from the language study at Columbia, but rather Num Shandu, the Castithan general who lead the charge on Defiance (and lost). Seems like he needed some cybernetics in order to get him back to working order again. In any case, after taking care of Jackleg Joe, the last boss I got stuck on, it seems that I breezed right through the other stages and bosses to Nim Shandu, the final boss in the game's story arc.
Nim is equipped with an EGO unit, same as my own character, but apparently his is super charged. Well, either that, or he can use his tools much better than I can! In either case, he is wiping the floor with me. The first time through, when I was first introduced to this boss I almost got him! Well, sort of - I only later realized that had I actually gotten his health bar down to zero on that round, I would have to go two more rounds with him (so I don't feel as bad for the loss). That said, I am actually not quite sure how to proceed. Should I grind some more to reach 700 or 1000 EGO points before attempting this boss? Should I just keep trying to beat him as I am now? The annoying this is that I can't save my progress, so if I give up when I reach him, when I play again I have to go through his minions again (ugh...)
I guess I'll focus on class for now, and worry about Nim later...

Windows 10, out for a spin
Saturday, Nov 14 2015, 04:30 Games, Linux, Microsoft, MMORPG, StarTrek, tablet, Technology, ubuntu, upgrade, VideoGames, Windows PermalinkSure, Windows 10 isn't "new" any more, and there are enough people out there that upgraded so that they could get that annoying popup to go away, but as an enterprise user I am happy to not have had to deal with that "do you want to upgrade now?" (they should have used Clippy to make those announcements) :-)
With work done at my home, and my work computers resting for now, it seemed like a good time to go through and upgrade at least one computer to see what's new. Seeing as my campus is still on Windows 7 enterprise, and probably won't be making the move to 10 any time soon, I thought I'd be on the forefront of things (like the good old days) since I am (sort of) the tech guru of the department.
I decided to upgrade my Samsung Slate 7, which is a computer I got a while back, and it's been my daily driver for days that I work from home. It's also my main Star Trek Online machine (also when I work from home). As a machine it's perfectly fine, but I realized that the 128GB space (99 usable I think) was a bit of an issue.
For whatever reason, even though I've uninstalled things like crazy, the machine was still running out of space. I deleted OneNote Touch, which I never used - and that saved me 3.5GB (seriously? That much space for an app that I didn't use?). Furthermore I uninstalled SkyDrive and deleted the local files (which I never used) and that gave me another 7 GB. Finally, I had to uninstall STO which came in at a whopping 23 GB. After all this deleting, I was finally able to install Windows 10.
The installation itself was pretty painless, and getting back and running wasn't a big issue after the fact. I did end up re-installing STO (which was only 12GB...so I guess that there were a lot of old patch files on there that I deleted). The Windows Menu has returned, and it seems to look like Windows Phone, which I suppose makes sense - if you want people who are used to Windows Interface to pick up your mobile device - or vice versa. I ended up going with a 'classic' Windows 8 look, having the Start Menu be full screen. I am not a fan of the vertical scroll, however. I did prefer the horizontal layout of the application in the previous version of Windows.
Finally, I setup Cortana as the voice assistant. Despite the fact that I setup my voice to be recognized, Cortana doesn't seem to respond. At some point soon I will update my Surface Pro 3 as well and see if that makes a difference. Cortana did give me an error saying that the microphone placement on the Slate wasn't optimal, but I did go through the training sequence without a problem. Small problems.
So, after a day of this, things seem to be back to normal, in terms of productivity. The only thing I find odd is that a pop-up came up asking me if I like windows 10, and this was less than 24 hours since I installed it (and only around 3 hours of use). I would have to say that I don't have enough experience with it to say whether I like it or not, but I do prefer it to Windows 7. Definitely much more touch friendly.
I do wonder if MacOS X will go down that touch-friendly route, and if the iPad Pro is a precursor to that.
