Gamercat waits for Greek Santa ;-)

A little holiday humor from Gamercat that I just came across.  A little late for most western Santas (St. Nicholas), but not that late for Greek Santa (St. Basil).

xbox year in review

I was going to title this the Gaming year in review, but I've done some gaming on UPlay (the Assassin's Creed Chronicles), on Android, and on Steam which don't have fancy infographics for me. So, here is what I ended up playing on xbox :-) No surprise that most games are shooters. I did enjoy Bayonetta (and had I persisted I would have racked up more hours on it), but one can only get so frustrated at a game before you hang up the towel.

I guess Picard changed his tune in the books that continue the series ;-)

what an odd recommendation...

I was on GoodReads the other day updating my reading progress when I saw this bizarre book recommendation.  I wonder if this is society's commentary on MOOCs :p

GoodReads: Year in Review

I was holding off on posting this just in case I finished another book before the new year, but it seems like I will need to spend this week actually doing some writing for the dissertation proposal (can't let all this fine reading go to waste!). On the one hand I am surprised at how much I read, and on the other hand I am not.  This doesn't even include all the articles I read.  I keep track of the peer reviews I do on Publons, but there is nothing I have to keep track of the articles I read.  I wonder if Mendeley and CiteULike have end-of-year reporting features like these other social networks do.  Mendeley seems to still be going strong, but CiteULike seems to have really stalled in development since it was acquired.

Χρόνια πολλά! Καλά Χριστούγεννα!

Χρόνια πολλά και καλά Χριστούγεννα σε όσους διαβάζουν ακόμα το μπλογκ Κάθε χρονιά λέω πως θα ξαναρχίσω να στέλνω κάρτες Χριστουγέννων και κάθε φορά ο χρόνος περνάει πολύ γρήγορα… Λες το 2018 να με φωτίσει και να θυμηθώ να στείλω κάρτες σε φίλους και οικογένεια;

Mine! Mine! Mine!

With the new Kramp'Ikri event on star trek online this season came a new accolade to collect: mine, mine, mine!  I was aiming to earn this before Christmas hit (and I started working more on my dissertation)...and mission (just) accomplished! In the Kramp'Ihri event (usually comes along twice per hour) when you attack the Kramp'ihri, one of the things that he tosses at you (from time to time) are gifts.  One are Red, some are Blue, and some are Green.  Collect 33 of each color gift and you earn this accolade (not really sure how many points it's worth).  The Green gifts are the most common to drop, the Blue are uncommon, and the Red are a little more rare. As was expected the Red ones where what caused the delay in earning this accolade (I've had Green and Blue gifts covered for a week now).  Twelve more days of a short daily grind to earn the season's Breen ship - which shouldn't distract too much from working on my literature review ;-)

Publons year in review

Today we're looking at my year in review at Publons (a site which helps you track the academic peer reviews you've done).  This site is a little more interactive (you have to mouseOver in order to see some stats..

Here are some of the MouseOver stats:
  • Total citations of reviewed manuscripts --> 3 (average for field 7.4)
  • Total citations of authored manuscripts -->2 (average for field 16.6)
  • Sum of altmetric scores for reviewed manuscripts --> 9.3 (average for field 27.5)
  • Number of manuscripts published in 2017 that you reviewed --> 3 (average for field 2.3)
  • Academy modules completed --> 9 (total for field 20)
  • Journal reviewed for the most --> Computers & Education (4 reviews)
  • Average words per review --> N/A (total for field 518.5)
  • Ration of reviews to publications --> N/A (total for field 1:0.1)
  • Sum of altmetric scored for authored publications --> N/A (total for field 24.6)
  • Number of manuscripts edited --> N/A (total for field 1)
  • Number of excellent reviews --> N/A (total for field 51)
  • Number of peer review awards --> N/A (total for field 111)
  • Academy cadets supervised --> N/A (total for field 4)
  • Times "recommended" was used in reviews -->  N/A (total for field 210)
Considering that I've taken a bit of a step back from CIEE these past 18 months to focus on my dissertation, no bad on the number of manuscripts edited.  The number of words per review...well, to be fair I never submit those to Publons...maybe I should start - just to get a sense of how I am doing.
