Review: Patterns of Interference
Friday, May 31 2019, 04:30 Books, Entertainment, goodreads, Sci-Fi, Social Media, Social Networks, StarTrek Permalink
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
What bums me out the most about this book is that there is no "Star Trek Enterprise will continue..." at the end of the book. I wonder if this series will come back in the future.
Anyway - even if it is the last book to come out (certainly hope not), this was a rather fun book to read. I was hoping that Trip would come back from the cold, but it seems like he's in the shadows forever (if one considers the Nog & Jake part of the story in the future discussing this topic). Some highlights:
- Federation is debating the non-interference principle (what is to become the prime directive) but not resolutions come of it. Shran and Archer at opposite sides of the debate, but they take a break so that Archer can be by Porthos' side - porthos is dying.
- We see a plant-base sentient being - pretty cool (and opens up the door for that plant-based species in the animated series)
-Section 31 is finally gone!....NOT! They go underground. Which really messes with Discovery-era events that show them out in plain sight! Want to know what happened here!
Fun book, but the end with Porthos really tugs at the heart strings...

A good conclusion to the "ware saga" (or so it seems). Of note in this book, we see Archer coming around to the Vulcan's "logic" of non-interference (aka, the "prime directive") based on the events that happened with the Saurians. We also see Trip seriously looking to take down Section 31 (which we know doesn't happen from what we see on screen anyway). We also are introduced to a species that wouldn't have developed their mechanical adeptness if it not for the Ware and their enhancements of them. This does pose some interesting questions about intelligence, ableism, and galactic citizenship.

This novel continues with the parade of worlds that are joining the federation: in this book we see the Deltans, and we continue an exploration of those "Ware" space stations which we originally saw on screen in Enterprise. Meanwhile on Vulcan the Kirshara is stolen and people try to use it to overthrow the new Vulcan government. It's fun to see ancestors of characters that we see on screen in later Treks (Dax, Kirk, Paris, and we see the birth of Sarek at the end of this one).

Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Ghosts

Not a bad story. Basically a story of a planet who wants to join the Federation, but there are two rival factions on that planet (basically a no-no for membership in the Federation). One side invents a device that moves you into another sub-space type of universe (basically looks like the Matrix's loading room), and people freak out. People who move into this universe are thought to be dead (they are not) and when they communicate with people in the regular dimension, those folks think they see ghosts. Interesting story. The aliens remind me of the "emperor" from StarCom.

This was a good continuation of the first book in the series. Here the federation is encouraging the aligned systems of Rigel to join the federation. I always thought that the Rigelians were a homogenous society, but apparently not. Also interesting that they were currently ruled by mobster families. Overall an interesting story, and in the end we find out that Trip goes Rogue. Section 31 may not be as wholesome as one might have believed (shocker ;-) )

Review: A Choice of Futures

This was a good start to the Rise of the Federation series. There is an interesting description of where the TOS uniform colors came from, an overview of what's happening to the fleet, the growing pains of getting different alien peoples to work together, and so on. On top of that, the federation is already being seen as a threat for various factions are trying to destabilize it before it grows. Fun story.
The attached drawing is from C. L. Bennett explaining, and visualizing, the new uniform. The one thing that's missing from here is that the Red color uniform was an homage to the Tellarite uniforms (which may have been engineering uniforms), each of the division colors represented one of the four members of the original alliance

Review: The Romulan War: To Brave the Storm

A satisfying end to the Earth-Romulan war. When all is said and done Trip is still out in the shadows, Archer is now a commodore, and the Vulcans, Telaraties, and Andorians finally came back to the table. Archer is hinted at becoming president of the Federation one day. There was also a nice little epilogue years down the road hinting at potentially Trip and T'Pol getting together. I am still surprised that a 6 year war was done in two books. Overall, a fun read.

Got some more accolades (STO)
Sunday, May 5 2019, 04:00 achievements, Entertainment, MMORPG, Sci-Fi, StarTrek, video games, VideoGames, Windows PermalinkIt's been a while since I played Star Trek Online with the intent to be on the accolade hunt. I actually I thought I had most of them, but then I came across a list created by one of the game's other players and saw that I was missing a considerable amount. After clearing out the retired accolades (ones that you can't get any longer), and the ones that you can in theory get, but you need to either be a different class of character (I am a tactical captain, so I ignored the Engineering and Science accolades), and the accolades that you can technically get if some shares a retired mission with you. Once I got my list, I was off! Here's what I've accumulated over the past couple of months
Ace
This one is from the episode Delta Flight. The description is "Proved your piloting skills with Delta Flight" which didn't give a lot to go on. I got this by going through all the rings/checkpoints in the mission. There are a few more accolades in Delta Flight that I have no idea (yet) how to get.Belongs in a Museum
This is one is from the mission Vorgon Conclusions, where the player has to find all of the artifacts in the Starbase after the Undine assault. This was a pain, especially near the end, because there are 3 possible slots with around 20ish potential items (random number generator driven?) Getting all of the items was a slow process. I've been working on this since the episode was introduced.
A bit of a fixer upper & It's a trap
Two accolades, same image. These are from the mission Surface Tension. Things that could easily be missed such as "View damage at the far Force Field, after parting ways with Ensign R'raak" or require a replay, such as "Help Injured Officers and replay mission – or beam out and back in before reaching Quinn – for 5 accumulated kills."
Cease & Decist
From the mission "Romulan Mystery", to get this you needed to "You tried to arrest Obisek during the weekly episode Frozen" - since I tend to be a good guy in my game play, I had never attempted this.
Clean up their mess
From the Researcher Rescue mission, "Scan the dead body in the middle of the room of where the boss is"History of New Romulus (Lore)
I totally missed the Lore component of New Romulus when it came out - or found it, and summarily forgot about it since it required a lot of repetition. I just spent EC on the exchange to get the data chips for this one. Expensive, but worth it.In Memoriam (Lore)
One more Lore related accolade that I had completely missed, from the mission Shadow Play. I think I had scanned most artifacts originally, but had missed a few.Incarcerator
From the mission Frozen - just needed to replay a couple of times to arrest some Remans after the end of the missionLast Days of the Dewans (Lore)
One more Lore accolade on New Romulus. No data chips for this one. Just lots of dropping and adding on one of the missions so that the right artifacts could pop up in one of the Dewan caves...Magnificent Five
Basically choosing the Hard Option on Kobali Prime (do the mission on your own without allies)Name the Stakes
Another Researcher Rescue mission - "Scan the planet at the beginning of the mission" which is easily missed...Saurophobe
An accolade for destroying all of the Voth capital ships (which conveniently spawn in the same area!)
The Impossible
From the Undine mission "Assimilation" and the way to get the accolade was to Scan the Undine on the examination tables. Optional thing to do, not even an optional objective, so easy to miss.

Review: The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This book continues on from the previous couple of novels and explores the first year of the Romulan war. Archer becomes a Commodore (interesting how they say it's an archaic title, but still used, perhaps foreshadowing the change of the rank name around TNG). Trip's alive (yay); there are heavy losses but Romulans are driven off. This book was longer (or felt longer) than previous ones, but was quite engaging.
