Ubisoft was having a sale on the UPlay store recently. Since an Xbox One is not in my near future, I decided to get the Assassin's Gold Pack (on sale of course) which included both Unity and Syndicate. After about 2 days of downloading Unity (approximately 50GB) I discovered that the game is unplayable on my Surface Pro 3. Even on the lowest settings (which I was pretty content to
Star Trek Equinox...no more
Well... I guess this particular one is confirmed (at least on Trek.fm's Babel Conference page) as being defunct. The video production was cancelled (for whatever reason), and I guess it's not going back to its "roots" as an audio drama? Let's see if it flies. Disappointing :-/

Vacation: Technology Fails!

myWind IT AppBefore I go ahead and talk a bit about mobile access while abroad, I thought I would start off with the technology fails of the trip. Some were completely avoidable, and some, not so much. I guess first I will tackle the issue of power. The last time I vacationed I only vacationed with one device: my smartphone. It was also a non-connected phone so the battery lasted a long
One mor bites the dust...
Ever since Google got rid of the "share on reader" and "share with note" options in favor of the "+1" in Google Reader I've been not using the web version of Google Reader. Of course, google just evolved the handles for these two sharing options from their web reader, they did not remove the underlying functionality. As a matter of fact it's still there, which meant that apps like byline have been
Well, shows you how much I used Apple's Ping social network! It went offline at the end of September and I only realized it because it was mentioned on the Engadget podcast ;-)Ping was Apple's music social network, only accessible via iTunes. This project was doomed from the start, and Apple seemed to be the only one not to know (or acknolwedge it). Something that lived
Last spring, in anticipation of buying a new Mac Mini, I decided to spend some money to get a new Magic Trackpad (awesome little device), a new wireless keyboard (which I have been using with my iPad, and Samsung Slate) and an external SuperDrive. The original intent, of course, was that I would use these with a new Mac Mini as soon as I got one. I was expecting that I would get one in the summer as
When I was a kid, every two years (once for the winter Olympics and once for the summer Olympics) my grandfather would drive us to Ancient Olympia, about 30 or so minutes from where we lived, to witness the lighting of torch ceremony. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was a rather huge privilege to be able to witness this so often, and to be able to visit these archeological sites with th frequency
Adieu Knol and Ovi Share
Well, two more have bitten the dust! Google's Wikipedia competitor, Knol, is shutting its doors, and Ovi Share (I guess the successor to MOSH?) is doing the same. Ovi Share came out when I had my iPhone, so I really ended up not using it that much. For what it's worth, I think that Nokia should have partnered up with Flickr and YouTube for people to do their sharing, but anyway - adieu
Would you like a Latte with your Occupy?
Free Lodging?Perhaps voting Republican on Super Tuesday has rubbed off on me giving me a "get off my lawn" attitude, or perhaps it's the ineffectiveness of Occupy UMass Boston that's just getting to me. Don't get me wrong, I support affordable education for everyone, especially at State Schools like UMass Boston, and I support affordable textbooks and an equal opportunity for everyone - but it
Last Friday I got my new iMac at work (yay!) and I was busy transferring stuff from my old iMac that I have to give back to my old department soon. Due to this setup I didn't spend much time looking into what came withy iMac, in other words what came in the box. When I looked more closely yesterday I saw that the recovery disc was missing, or rather a recovery disk was not included. A quick web search
Copy-to-hard drive fail...
The weekend before last I decided to use my massive hard drive to its full potential, and also clean up some of my living room by copying over my xbox games from disc to hard drive. I thought that by copying the games to disc would just allow me to run them from the hard drive, instead of the game disc, and I would be able to file my games away so that they are not in the way. It took several
Thoughts on the new xbox interface
When I came home yesterday I fired up my xbox 360 to get the new OS update that gives me the Metro style UI. In the grand scheme of things I do like it. I think it's high time that Microsoft looked at its product offerings and designed some consistency (or at least a common theme) across its services. The desktop and Window metaphor is getting a bit stale - it's still useful, but not in all contexts
Red Ringed! (or Red Rung?)
Well, I guess the inevitable happened last night. I powered up my xbox 360, put in Alone in the Dark (I am close to the end, so I decided to just keep going) and the unit froze a few second into the game. It has been freezing the past few days but it kept coming back. In any case. I turned it off, turned it back on again, and this time it froze on the xbox bootup screen... Turned it off
Google Reader, you just got less usable...
Man, I have to say, what a FAIL. Yesterday morning, when I came into work I still had the "old" Google Reader interface because I had left the computer on sleep all night so when I came in I was back to where I left it. Read a few items...shared a few others and then I refreshed...bad idea! I got the new interface! So, I have to say, the new interface isn't bad. It's the same as Google
Giving up on Atlas Shrugged
Having played a number of games that make reference to Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, I decided that it would be a good idea to actually read the book that has served as some sort of inspiration for those games. This book is also seems to be a book that has won critical acclaim, so it seemed like a good idea to read it. Thus I put this book on my Overdrive account (public library audiobooks) and
The other day I was curious to see if Overdrive had an iOS app that I could load on my iPod Touch or iPhone so I can take advantage of the service offerings of my local public library. I often go to the library to get videos or books (and on occasion books on CD), but lately I haven't had much of an opportunity to browse the stacks - and quite honestly my academic library keeps me busy with academic

Here's a second Location FAIL, this time thanks to MobileMe.Since this past weekend Apple decided to update MobileMe I wanted to see how well the updated FindMyiPhone feature works. Well, from this one test, not that great!Sure, it's only 15 minutes away by driving, but if my iPhone (iPod or iPad) were stolen or lost, this service would not be so great at locating my device (the sound and the message
iPad 1.0 - FAILish
I have to say that I was thoroughly unimpressed by today's iPad event. Don't get me wrong I disliked iPod 1.0 (didn't buy one until the 3rd generation iPod), and I disliked the first iPhone (didn't buy one until the 3GS). If history is any indication I will probably like iPad 3.0 (either that or I won't care as much). So here's a rundown:The Pros:Nice iCal App - I gotta say, I am a sucker for design
If you can read this....
...then it's probably not all Greek to you ;-)Well, here's a funny story about someone trying a little too hard (I guess). At St. John's College (New Mexico, US) proud of its emphasis on the classics, they printed a T-shirt last year that in Attic Greek that said: "If you can read this, you're overeducated." Well, that was the intent! They actually made mistakes on the accent and breathing marks.
The other day I saw that a local community college had sent us a catalogue of courses for the upcoming semester. We decided to flip through it just to see what they are offering, after all you never know what you are going to find. When we get to the computer science area we see the description seen in this screenshot. OK, it's a class where one learns about ISPs, the Internet, online services like
One of the biggest stories over this past weekend was the Great Sidekick Fail of 2009. As a prospective user (well, OK, low chances of being a prospective user now) this incident is causing a lot of alarms to go off. Both Engadget and other sources (HipTop 3 for example) are pointing to a lack of backups and a failure to move servers or merge data. Well, OK, the failure to merge data or move to different
I was waiting at the train station the other day when I saw the advertisement bellow. The text reads "America's most convenient bank. Maine to Florida"I don't know what language they are using, but I was under the impression that 'to' implied a continuum, including the exteremes and everything in between. The graphic clearly shows that it's NOT Maine to Florida because there are three states that
Location fail, part deux
This past weekend I was giving Google Latitude a second chance. When I used it the first time around it had a bit of a hard time finding my location. While technically I was within that big giant circle (I guess that was where the cell tower was), I do have an iPhone IIIgs which does have a built in GPS.In other apps that use my location (like the maps app) it finds my location precisely, switch over
I was reading this article on Mashable over the weekened and this little statistical tidbit raised an eyebrow. According to a new study by Proofpoint, an Internet security firm, of companies with 1,000 or more employees, 17 percent report having issues with employee’s use of social media. And, 8 percent of those companies report having actually dismissed someone for their behavior on sites like Facebook
Here's something you don't see every day.I was trying to log onto the student self-service system the other day to check out if there are any additional fall semester courses that I should be aware of. I fired up by browser, typed in the address for the WISER (the student self service system) and I see the warning bellow. Weird!I typed umb.edu and tried to navigate that way - all OK - no warningI
