Some more STO accolades

I've been saving this post and keeping track of accolades I earned since the last time I posted about my accolade hunt in Star Trek Online. Since a few of them are now collected - here is what I've earned. These are in the order I got them (2019-2020).Time BanditThis was one of the few Red Alert accolades I was missing. To earn this one you need to save the entire cargo fleet from being
Klingon Concertina Festival | STO

Another belated April Fool's joke. The Artisanal Sonification System came back this year (I always look forward to it), and apparently this year many headliner NPCs were playing the concertina wherever you usually found them. I did come across a download of all Artisanal Sonification System sounds, but I forgot to bookmark it...d'oh! I would have liked to add those sounds as alert
10 years of Star Trek Online!
Well, it's no small feat for an MMO to make it 10 years! So cheers to you, STO! I didn't start playing until it became Free-to-Play (so I've only been playing for 8 years), but it's still an amazing game. As is customary for the STO team, they released an anniversary infographic.I only wish I had started a Klingon and Romulan Delta Recruit back in the day so I could claim those account-wide
OK, maybe a few more accolades...
Well, summer 'vacation' on Risa is upon us in Star Trek Online, and has been for a while. This gave me a bit of an opportunity to claim a few more accolades that are Summer Event accolades (as well as go back for a few more Breen ones that seemed 'easy' to get)Unauthorized beach party - Basically come back to one of the beach-front spots after dark to join a fire-side party. Review: Star Trek Online: The Needs of the Many

Star Trek Online: The Needs of the Many by Michael A. MartinMy rating: 4 of 5 stars This was an interesting read, and it definitely adds some more context to STO's Undine arc (which made the Undine Infiltration in the game make much more sense. The book is told from the lens of Jake Sisko who is interviewing many well-known (and not so well-known) characters in the Star Trek universe about
On an accolade roll! -- well... I was...
I was in a bit of a roll with accolades on Star Trek Online; Accolades I hand't earned on the first play through. For some of these missions I haven't gone back to them in years. That said, I think I am done with the accolade hunt for now. Some are event-specific accolades (Summer event, or Arena of Sompek) that come around once in a while (summer even should be here "soon"), and

It's been a while since I played Star Trek Online with the intent to be on the accolade hunt. I actually I thought I had most of them, but then I came across a list created by one of the game's other players and saw that I was missing a considerable amount. After clearing out the retired accolades (ones that you can't get any longer), and the ones that you can in theory get, but you need
STO: The Gorn Discovery
Wednesday, Apr 3 2019 10:16 | aprilFools, Entertainment, Humor, MMORPG, StarTrek, video games, VideoGames
Along with the "artisanal" soundtrack for the game this year (something that seems to have become an annual tradition in STO), there was an announcement for a new (April Fool's) expansion of the game titled "The Gorn Discovery"There are a lot of humorous puns here (see announcement below) , but in all seriousness this would have been an interesting expansion. At the very least it's another starting

Star Trek: Discovery: The Light of Kahless by Kirsten BeyerMy rating: 5 of 5 stars Not a bad comic, and one that brings forth a bit of prequel mythos into Star Trek Discovery. In this one we see the origins of the Sacrophagus ship, and T'Kuvma and Voq themselves, and other Klingons who are acting...dishonorably...to say the least. I am wondering if there will be any references to this

It's been a while since the actual anniversary date of STO, but it's been busy, so this draft has been sitting in my...drafts...for a while. This year Cryptic broke up the pieces of the infographic and released them a piece at a time on twitter, before putting the entire thing up on their website at the end. I am not surprised that Tactical captains are first in the list, and I am also
More Tardigrade news...

email update from STO - for those like me who got Lt. Tardigrade as their nouveau tomagochi ;-)Thanks to some generous donations from the local shipyard, the Lieutenant now had his very own starship bridge, of sorts, in his enclosure. We managed to secure three decommissioned consoles, and his very own Captain's chair. It's a little beat up, to be sure, but he doesn't seem to mind, and he's been running
Star Trek Online: Age of Discovery
Saturday, Jan 19 2019 02:00 | DSC, Entertainment, MMORPG, online, Sci-Fi, StarTrek, video games, VideoGames
Last fall, in what seems like the heels of the "Victory is Life" expansion some new content dropped on STO, titled "Age of Discovery" which seems to be content for the game that runs concurrent with the show that started yesterday evening, and perhaps with the on-going IDW series on Star Trek Discovery. With this new content you start off as a cadet in the Discovery era of Star Trek
Victory is life is here!
Well, the fourth expansion of Star Trek Online, which brings us a sliver of the Gamma quadrant, gamma recruits, and the Jem'Hadar playable faction is here today! I had an opportunity to play a bit today as a new Jem'Hadar "first" (aka captain) under the name of Arak'Ouzo (yes having some fun with the name). The first couple of missions were quite fun to play, and flying a "bug-ship" is quite

Man...after close to 6 years of play this accolade is finally complete! The other day I had the Dabo table going at DS9 on STO while having my iPad read back articles to me (some supplemental readings for the dissertation). It's pretty mindless to click and bet on Dabo, so while reading I just kept hitting 'play'. Well - finally I hit the 1,000,000 mark! I've won 1,000,000
Victory is Life! The next Star Trek Online expansion
"Victory is Life" is a saying of the Jem'Hadar, one of the subjugated races of the Dominion (...or is it "in the Dominion"?) who are, basically, the warriors of that alliance. It is also the name of the next expansion for Star Trek Online which is hitting PCs his coming summer (I sure hope it's not concurrent with the Summer Event on Risa!). I do find it a little odd that the developers chose

Looks like Defiance (the MMO) is getting an update. The updated version launches this summer and is called Defiance 2050. The television show took place starting in 2046, so I guess the developers might be moving the timeline a little forward (well, the show was 3 seasons long, so many it picks up the story after the show?). On the good side of things it seems like they are streamlining the
Mine! Mine! Mine!
With the new Kramp'Ikri event on star trek online this season came a new accolade to collect: mine, mine, mine! I was aiming to earn this before Christmas hit (and I started working more on my dissertation)...and mission (just) accomplished! This past weekend in Star Trek Online the Azure Nebula queue was the featured queue for group missions, which meant this was a good opportunity to earn an accolade that I haven't been able to get since I started going on the accolade hunt (mostly because people weren't queuing up for the Azure Nebula mission)In this mission... Star Trek Online, Season 14
With Star Trek Las Vegas upon us, STO has announced some really interesting stuff coming down the pike, including captain Georgi LaForge, revamped Galaxy-class ships, and TNG Skants! I think that last one made me smile uncontrollably ;-) The Lukari and the Kentari seem to be kissing and making up for past aggression, and the Jem Hadar are back! When I saw the trailer (below) yesterday I expected
STO summer event is upon us!
Next week the summer event starts in STO. Looks like a T6 Vorgon dreadnaught is the main prize (really wish I could get the first two summer ships that I never bothered getting....and not in a Phoenix pack!)
Holy Chalupa, Batman! After close to 5 years of playing this Star Trek Online (since it went Free to Play basically) my primary character (Tolya Kotrolya) has finally maxed out all of his commendations! Escalation hit the interwebs last week, and having played a bit this weekend it's not bad! The Smoke & Mirrors mission reminded me a little of Star Wars (the aesthetic), and a little bit of Captain Planet (the "don't mess up your planet by polluting, Kids!)I played a bit in the competitive warzone queues and the space one is definitely my favorite or the two. The artisanal sound system

STO is down for maintenance. Last night the First Contact event was hard to get into, which I assume is one of the things being looked at. I loved this patch note today: Resolved an issue where the Heavy Escort Railgun was healing enemies instead of damaging them. Healing your enemies would make for some really long battles - but this gives me a good idea for a console:

I saw, on the the STO blog, that First Contact day is almost upon us! For the event, STO will be doing the following:Captains who participate will search the area for useful parts, just like Cochrane scavenged the pieces for the Phoenix. Using these parts in conjunction with a basic hull assembly, captains will make their own model of the Phoenix by combining engines, hull, and stabilizer parts found

That title is a bit heavy on the sarcasm ;-)A new season of Star Trek Online has been announced, coming to us on PCs next week. A temporal captain!
Wednesday, Jan 18 2017 08:21 | Entertainment, Games, MMORPG, online, StarTrek, video games, VideoGames
Finally! I've now become an old school temporal captain ;-)About five years ago when I first started playing Star Trek online what I really wanted was to fly around in a Wells Class temporal science vessel (and sport the 29th century uniform). The problem? The Wells was a lockbox ship, and before I knew the odds of getting one I ended up opening a whole lot of temporal lockboxes with nothing
Starship drydock clean-up
While my alts in STO don't have a ton of ships, my main character has had both the main shipyard and the dry docks filled to capacity, leading to an inability of testing out new ships. So...I guess it was time for some early-semester cleaning. I went through and I got rid of ships that were either received by leveling up the character (Tier 1 through 5 ships), and ships that I could reclaim
Woah! STO ships to be available as models!
Well...that's some news! Last week Cryptic announced that models of their ships will be purchasable in the future since they just started a partnership with a 3D printing company for fulfillment. What it sounds like is that you'll be able to purchase a 3D printed version of a ship you own in the game (so I guess I need to either own, or have owned, C-Store and Lobi ships... dang...)
Adieu SWTOR & Defiance, hello WoW
In the most recent lootcrate there was a code for World of Warcraft, for all expansions (up until the most recent Legion expansion that just hit) and a month's worth of free playtime. With my hard drive a bit short on space I made the decision to get rid of Defiance and SWTOR and try to recoup some space for the 40Gb installation of World of Warcraft. I received this month's lootcrate last night (woohoo!) and the physical goods were pretty cool. A planet express ship model, star trek decals, a comic book for 4001 AD (not sure what it is, so I guess I'll need to read it) and some Rick & Morty stuff (which again, not familiar with the series, but considering I've received Rick & Morty gear before, I might need to check out the series).Recently,

I was not convinced that I would be starting up a new character for this expansion, but after this trailer I am pumped! I may just create a new UFP character, do the faction specific missions, and then just use DOFF missions to level up to level 60. I might even skip most missions that I've done (at least) 4 times already. I guess this character falls into the tertiary category because
Star Trek Online - temporal Defense Reputation
Hey! With the advent of a new expansion, coming later on this summer, we will have a new reputation! The Temporal Defense Reputation (how many reputations is that now?). The Risa summer event is back on Star Trek Online! I think that the event goes until July, at which point Agents of Yesterday drops. Risa and the Winter Wonderland are both seasonal favorites of mine :-) As much as people look down upon playing "space barbie" (i.e. focusing on how your character and ship look instead of DPS), I am looking forward to rounding out the summer outfits for
Mandalorian's Revenge (SWTOR)
I am still working on the original content (haven't even gotten to expansions!), but the new chapter coming in a few days is looking interesting!
Still going on with SWTOR...
You know... When I started playing SWTOR, I didn't think the game would be this long! After playing Defiance for a bit (still playing, but not as much - maybe an hour or so per week), I thought that SWTOR would be light on story, and heavy on the end-game stuff (that requires people to subscribe for goodies). I am pretty happy to report that there is still a ton of story left in this game!I
Star Trek Online: Agents of Yesterday
Woah! The third major expansion to star trek online has been announced! Taking advantage of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, Star Trek Online is doing a TOS themed expansion. This sounds pretty exciting as players can start a character from the start and explore strange new worlds through that lens. One of the starter packs also comes packed with ships from the TOS era, as well as some
Woohoo! EGO upgrades based on XP :)
I like Defiance (the game), but as someone who usually plays solo, and has not joined a clan, leveling up can be a pain since leveling up (EGO level) was tied to pursuits that you did throughout the game (kill this many of this, level of that many of that, do all the missions in this arc, and so on). That works fine for those who want to pursue those game goals, but for me, as a solo point-and-shoot
Last week, purely by chance, I was looking to see if there were any Defiance earth republic (erep) hats or insignia on eBay. It's a show I like and having played at least some of Dark Metamorphosis on the MMO, I thought that maybe someone had created a replica of the Hellbug Combat Cap headgear that you can get in-game (hey Trion - real world merch for in-game items - killer idea! ;-) ).Anyway,
Defiance | Dark Metamorphosis
Hey! There is a defiance update! Woohoo! This past weekend I downloaded an update to defiance - which was surprisingly small (my weekly STO patches seem quite huge in comparison). Trying out SWTOR
Jedi KnightJust before the Christmas break I decided to give Star Wars: The Old Republic a try. I am definitely much more of a Star Trek fan, but I decided to give this game a try anyway. It is free-to-play, so this was definitely a draw. The game takes place a long long long time ago, in a galaxy far far far away. As a player you have the ability to pick from six classes:

I never knew the joys of limited storage space...until I started playing MMORPGs... I haven't gotten to having 8 "mule" characters yet but who knows? If I continue playing, with all the expansions, I might end up there :p
I was meaning for that to sound a bit like the iconic "khaaaaaan" yell, but oh well - fell flat a bit. Not talking about Nim Chimpsky here, the famous chimp from the language study at Columbia, but rather Num Shandu, the Castithan general who lead the charge on Defiance (and lost). Seems like he needed some cybernetics in order to get him back to working order again. In any case,

End of year shipyard clearning
With 2014 coming to a close, with little room to grow in my Star Trek Online ship inventory, and with several ships (Tier 5 Upgrade and Tier 6), like the Sarr Theln Breen ship, I thought it would be a good idea to go through my inventory and clean things out a bit. I was keeping a number of ships around in a just in case I want to use them again fashion, but the truth is they are a bit underpowered
Star Trek: Delta Rising (some thoughts)
It's been a couple of months since the release of Delta Rising, the second expansion to Star Trek Online, and I've been playing, slowly but surely, through the content and the reputation XP (while still keeping track of my research reputation). I did star playing some of the special mini-games, but since I could nor get the Risian Corvette
Shipyard spring clearning
With regular spring cleaning happening around here, I thought it would be a good opportunity to clean out the old shipyard of ships that I either rarely use in Star Trek Online, such as some free C-Store ships that I got as a promotion, or ships that I received earlier in the "career" of my captain that are just underpowered at the moment and can't really compete with end-game content.U.S.S. Sagittaron NCC-94534Well, after a couple of months of grinding through Star Trek Online with the new Legacy of Romulus expansion pack, I've played through the new missions on the Federation side (still haven't given the avatar a proper name and background. Oh well, one of these days). I've also just unlocked Tier V on the Nukara reputation front, which means I can start collecting
SWOTR, no go....
Over the weekend I decided to download and try out Star Wars: The Old Republic, a free to play MMORPG. I am not a huge Star Wars fan, I neither love it, nor I hate it. I just like it. So, with Star Trek Online being a little flaky this weekend I decided to download SWOTR and try it out. I was looking forward to it, but I didn't get very far with it. As a matter of fact I didn't even get
Tribble test fail :)
I was looking forward to playing on the beta server (Tribble) of Star Trek Online in order to get a preview of the new Legacy of Romulus expansion. Since I will be on vacation when it lands I was quite excited to see what Cryptic did with the story of the Romulans and how things progress.Well, after an accepted application to join the beta (didn't seem like it was that big of a wait) I was able
Legacy of Romulus coming our way!
OK, so this may be a bit of old news, but I am just getting to it now :) There is a new expansion coming to the Star Trek Online MMO which will feature the romulans as a faction that players can play. No much is known yet, but the developers have put up an Q&A blog post that has been quite informative. What I am hoping for is some new content. I ground through the Federation missions
Woot! Vice Admiral rank achieved!
Alright! I finally made it to Vice Admiral on Star Trek Online ("3 Stars" equivalent to real military) and thus I have reached the highest rank in the game (level 50). Too bad, because I was looking forward, with Season 7 just being released, having the capability of going up to full Admiral. Oh well!I got my Vice Admiralty while completing Season 4. Not bad at all! I am currently mostly finishing
Made Rear Admiral!
OK, so this past weekend I made Rear Admiral (lower half). I suppose that by next weekend I will make Rear Admiral upper half the way I am going. I am actually quite surprised at how quickly I am leveling up! It seems as though the number of experience points required to reach higher levels is linear and not exponential in nature. Oh well, I am not complaining ;-) I just wish I had
This weekend, through some bizarre confluence of spare time and family visits, I spend (what seems to be) a crazy amount of time with Star Trek Online. I now can appreciate the addiction nature of MMORPGs. While I have not joined any guilds (or fleets, as they are called in STO), and I have elected to continue to play solo, it is really easy to just go for one more mission, and then realize
Made it to Commander!
I've been playing Star Trek Online now (tempted to go for lifetime membership, but not sure I want to spend the money), and this weekend I made it up one more rank to Commander (level 20 character) which not only gives me a new ship (went with an Akira class escort this time), but also unlocks the Klingon missions too! I think I will leave the Klingon missions alone for now until I level up to
Star Trek Online | progress update
Last weekend I spent some time playing Star Trek Online with the intent of getting promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and getting a new ship. I had my eyes set on a new Excelsior class starship, but through bad clicking (and maybe some glitchyness?) I was given a Constitution class starship. OK, not a big deal, the main thing is that I now have an additional photon torpedo tube that I can use
My first MMO: Star Trek Online
So, I guess I can’t claim that I am not playing an MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) game any longer. I must confess, it was all a matter of the right theme, and the right price in order to get me to play an MMO game. World of Warcraft as a theme didn’t do it for me, and the subscription wasn’t really to my liking (considering that given my luck, whenever I pay for a subscription,
