Back to a modern smartphone

As much as I liked the Nokia N8, I needed to get back to using a more modern smartphone for my day to day work. I decided that waiting some more time for motorola (or Google) to release new flagship products would take a long time, and the few merits of the N8 wouldn't warrant waiting that long for the next android device.Symbian Belle Refresh OSSo, what did I like about the N8 and Symbian

A little less retro...with the N8

It's been an interesting experiment using the Motorola Razr as my daily driver, however with the lack of being able to just search the internet the phone didn't really do it for me (despite the satisfying "clack" you hear when you flip it closed). I was looking on the web and I decided to buy a refurbished Nokia N8 to keep me going a bit until I find an android phone which I like. The N8 was

I was listening to MacBreak Weekly today, when they were discussing this ad.Personally I am not interested in switching to the Lumia just yet (like the device, but Windows Phone isn't quite there yet for me), but I found this ad hilarious :-)
Adieu Knol and Ovi Share
Well, two more have bitten the dust! Google's Wikipedia competitor, Knol, is shutting its doors, and Ovi Share (I guess the successor to MOSH?) is doing the same. Ovi Share came out when I had my iPhone, so I really ended up not using it that much. For what it's worth, I think that Nokia should have partnered up with Flickr and YouTube for people to do their sharing, but anyway - adieu

This would be nice if Nokia hand't axed Symbian...Knowing that a platform has no future makes me less likely to go out an buy something that runs it. Nokia fooled me once with Maemo and the N800...

A few years back I had hypothesized that Nokia would roll all of its intellectual property and know-how into creating one kick-ass next-gen version of its Symbian OS, making Symbian not only competitive, but also able to support from the lowest of the low end phones to the highest end smartphones. Last week we found out otherwise. Nokia and Microsoft entered an agreement in which

Well, along with the death of the KIN last week, another piece of shocking news came out about the closure of Symbian-Guru. I've known Ricky from my Moderator days over at Howard Forums, and I've been following him on twitter. Anyone who had won't be surprised at the distance between him and Nokia. This morning I also listened to All About Symbian and they had some thoughts on the subject

Well, I've spent a whole day with iOS 4 running on my iPhone 3GS. I haven't upgraded my iPod Touch yet, but it's coming (my computer at home didn't have enough hard drive space to perform a backup of the device). One thing that I am still in awe of is Apple's ability to upgrade the OS on my device and yet I still manage to retain all of my apps, all of my settings, and all of my media (provided of
N900 ad - and the matrix

A week (or two?) ago Engadget had a new ad for the Nokia N900, and they had a light tongue and cheek comment about the ad hinting toward mental illness. I had a different take on the ad. The whole aesthetic of the ad reminds me of the original matrix (crossed perhaps with the Australian show the hollowmen). I expected agent Smith to make the focus group participants lose their mouth of something

Nokia Beta Labs has some pretty nifty things brewing (and sometimes they kill some of their most nifty things even though they are great - see Sports Tracker for example).Their newest software is called Braille Reader which apparently runs in the background and processes SMS messages for bind users of S60 phones. It seems pretty innovative as it uses haptic feedback on touch screens to convert roman

Things I miss from my N80 camera
While my iPhone IIIgs camera is theoretically the same spec as my old N80's camera (wow! what does THAT say about my camera?) there are a number of things that I really miss from my N80's camera.Flash:The lack of flash is a tad bit annoying. While I don't often take low-light shots, it is nice to have the option to take a photo with flash enabled for those few times that I really wanted to take a

Man! This is major drool territory here! (Yes more so than the N97!)I was really not sure about Maemo as a phone (even though I've been wishing for PIM functionality for ages!), but these promo shots are actually quite convincing. I am sure that the lack of applications on Maemo (yes I know there are apps, but not as many as I can have on my iPhone) will rectify itself soon. I do wonder if there

I was reading the symbian guru the other day and I was saddened to see that Nokia is discontinuing support for Sport Tracker. This was such a great application, and quite innovative if I do say so myself!I had sports tracker installed on my Nokia N80 and I used a separate bluetooth GPS unit (that added to my bulk) to track walks, hikes and then to get data from those excursions. It was great to plot

It's funny, I used to be very anti-iPhone and very pro-S60.I think this is turning around now due to some recent fumbles on Nokia's part and some recent wins on Apple's part. No, at&t is still the devil incarnate but I guess in order to get a good phone you have to dance with the devil. So what did Nokia do to change my perception of its phones? Well, it's what Nokia did not do, and what Apple did (or

After three years of daily use, my N80 finally gave up...or rather the display ribbon decided to give up. I am now stuck with a snow-white screen that shows me nothing, the D-pad does not work (most of the time) and the softkeys don't work (most of the time)...but on the upside I can still make and receive calls (sometimes)!I have decommissioned my trusty SonyEricsson P800 to act as my day-to-day
