Fan Film down!
Seems like another (star trek) fan-film is down...or at least temporarily halted. The Star Trek: Temporal Anomaly fan film seems to be in talks with CBS. Since they started their work before all the "guidelines" came about (mostly because of Axanar, it seems), they were under the impression that they were grandfathered into the non-guideline era. This is the third fan film (after
The Norman Door
I came across this on facebook today (while taking a break from the monster that is the dissertation proposal). It reminded me a lot of my undergraduate days when I took UI Design as part of my computer science degree, and I was reading the book by Don Norman :-)
A little Monday morning humor from the Nerdist (on account of the Tarantino Trek rumors)
The Disturbing History of the Suburbs
An interesting bit of American history from College Humor (via Alec Couros)
WWDC 207 highlights
I used to love Apple events. I'd wait for them like a kid waiting for (summer) Santa each June. This last one passed my by (again), completely under the radar. Luckily the Verge has a shortened highlight reel here. Enjoy! ;-)

Brief History of AOL
An interesting internet find this past weekend: The Rise and Fall of the first internet Empire (AOL) by Business Casual on YouTube
Facebook's year in Review
Figured out how to extricate this from facebook and upload it to YouTube. It's a little inaccurate (some old photos of me where tagged by someone, and I don't often post photos of myself on facebook, so that isn't as accurate as people who post a lot of Fb) - but it's fun to look at anyway. Και του χρόνου!
Revolution (loot crate video)
The December theme for Loot Crate is revolution. Even though I cancelled my subscription and prevented it from auto-renewing (thus no more lootcrate...for now), I still liked this video. I hope the Assassin's Creed item isn't something that I regret not having ;-)
Κλέισαμε άλλο ένα χρόνο...

Nintendo Switch - pretty interesting
Saturday, Oct 22 2016 03:00 | Entertainment, Games, nintendo, preview, Video, video games, VideoGames, youtube
Nintendo's new gaming console seems like a mix of mobile and at-home console gaming. Seems pretty interesting, and it reminds me of the stuff that OQO tried to do with computing. Let's see how it goes :)
Moros y Christianos, Sagunt 2016
Took some video of the Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) parade in Sagunto Spain. Here is part 4 of 4 (the longest video) to get a sense of the parade and costuming. It's a little game of thrones, but it looks fun. The festival of Moros y Cristianos represents the capturing of the cities by the Moors, and the subsequent recapturing (reconquista) by Christian armies.
Replacing the Nexus 4 screen - DYI
Wednesday, May 25 2016 02:30 | DIY, instructions, optimism, repair, Technology, Telephony, Video, youtube
For a brief moment I thought that I might go a little DIY with fixing my nexus 4 screen. I did find the parts on Amazon for around $30 (relatively cheap I think), however after viewing this instructional video I thought twice about it. It takes a professional 2 hours to do this, it will most likely take me more (if I don't ragequit ;-) ). The video lost me at using a hear gun to remove
"The War of 1996” | A United World News Special
I love this Independence Day sequel promo. Looks and feels like a news reporting segment. It gets you immersed into the alternative reality of the world. Can't wait for the movie to hit theaters!
May the fourth
I posted this last year - but it hasn't gotten old yet ;-) Tim Russ explains May the Fourth ;-)
The 120-sided die is now a reality (so, what can we use it for? random selection of students in large lecture halls? ;-) ) (via Nerdist)
Assassin's Creed Identity
I don't know how this escaped my notice (maybe too busy with school and everything else) but there is a new (to me) mobile game that was released this year. I am actually wondering if there will be any more Nintendo 3DS games coming out that are assassin's creed games. Seems to me that this would be a good candidate (along with the Chronicles lines of games).

I wonder if anyone in the 70's, when Atari came out, could have imagined this :) A pocket Atari console, in an atari cartridge no less!

LOL - a short film about Java going away. I think with the impending end-of-life of the JRE plugin for browsers this is pretty funny.
"Hello Gov, it's Marty" [Adele Spoof] by Kris Carter
Who said politicians can't be funny?
I've been looking to get some "must have" Gameboy Advance games since I just got myself a refurbished unit back in the fall. When the GBA originally came out I thought that consoles were not that great of an investment, so I was more into computer gaming (the little I could have on the Mac in the days of Classic MacOS). I came across a "must play" game called Ninja Five-O which reminds
The problem with the transporter...
This came across my feeds last week Very interesting philosophical question - which I think was also addressed by MetaTreks on trek.fm in one of their first episodes (but with the enterprise rather than a human being transported)
Gear of war 4 - woooah
Saturday, Mar 12 2016 09:11 | Entertainment, GearsOfWar, Video, video games, VideoGames, XBOX, youtube
Looks like an xbox one is in my future (well... now it's a definite) ;-)Not that you get to see a lot of game play in this game informer video, but it's interesting to see that the world goes on after the events of Gears of war 3 :-)
Wintergatan - Marble Machine
2000 marbles make some really nice music ;-)
Star Trek Horizon is out!
Friday, Mar 4 2016 03:00 | BattlestarGalactica, crowdfunding, FanFilm, MMORPG, online, Sci-Fi, space, Stargate, StarTrek, Video, video games, VideoGames, youtube
[SPOILERS - if you have not see it yet, go see it] A couple of summers ago, while driving around in Greece, I was listening to Trek.fm (best time to try new podcasts is when you are driving a lot!) In one of their shows (the continuing mission) they explore fan made productions that continue the stories set in the Trek universe - and Star Trek Horizon was one of these productions. After a long time
Boat of love the next generation
Something humorous found on facebook recently. A little parody of Star Trek: The Next Generation as the Love boat. This seems like an SNL sketch (from the time before I watched it). Look at those uniforms! ;-)
How Star Wars: The force awakens should have ended
ROFL - "bring me my precious!!!" ;-)

OK - first of all - SPOILERS - If you have not seen the series on Amazon Prime, go ahead and watch it - otherwise don't complain about the potential spoilers in this post ;-)Over the winter break I ended up catching up on some television series that I wanted to see this past fall. It's very odd to 'catch up' on television considering that the TV was called the "χαζοκούτι" when I was
Star Wars Engineer
Wednesday, Jan 6 2016 05:30 | engineering, Facebook, Humor, physics, Sci-Fi, Social Media, StarWars, Video, youtube
Seems like this is one of the things that is popular this week on the internet: The Death Star Engineer giving a speech - or rather an explanation - of why his design was sound, and it was only because "magic space wizards" were involved that it blew up ;-) Pretty funny if you ask me :-)
Star Wars a-cappella
Star Wars isn't my top sci-fi franchise, but this a-cappella of the Star Wars themes by Jimmy Fallon, The Roots, and the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" cast is pretty interesting :-)
Τζαφάρ (Jafar) - a short video

Terminator Genisys Easter Eggs
Even though the movie has been out for a while, I just came across this video of terminator references in the most recent Terminator movie :-) Courtesy of "New Rockstars" on Youtube
Star Trek Timelines
Monday, Oct 5 2015 04:30 | Android, Games, iPad, SciFi, StarTrek, Video, video games, VideoGames, youtube
I came across this video introducing Star Trek Timelines. This seems like a pretty interesting game, which is also developed locally in Massachusetts. This seems to be a mobile game (and from the graphics it looks pretty great!). Wonder if my aging iPad 2 will run it ;-)
Star Trek Renegades, episode 1 is out!
After the long wait, the first episode of Star Trek Renegades is out! Since it's an hour and a half pilot it should probably be considered episodes 1 and 2, but whatever :-) I originally expected this to be out last December, but it seems that the deadlines kept falling back.I actually have not seen the finished episode yet. I was a backer of the project so I got a link to the pre-final
The future looks so...past!
Going through my Pocket reading list this morning I came across this Concept video, which seems to be produced by Apple in 1987. Today it looks a bit like a parody, but it was still worth a look. The funny thing is that 1997 in this video seemed quite "off" from what real 1997 was. I was surprised to see so many computers looks like the Mac II. The other interesting thing is that
Pinky and the Brain do Who's on First
For the longest period of time, "Who's on first" for me was a sports bar next to fenway park. It's not hard to see where this sports bar was my only reference for the comedy routine. I had never seen the original Abbot & Costello version, and I walked by this place daily on my way to Tae Kwon Do when I was in high school. Eventually I got to see the original (see bellow) and more more recently...the
Blast from the past! Java Tools from 1997.I wasn't watching computer chronicles at that point, but I remember some of this because in 1998 I started computer science as an undergraduate and the language was Java ;-)
Star Trek Online | progress update
Last weekend I spent some time playing Star Trek Online with the intent of getting promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and getting a new ship. I had my eyes set on a new Excelsior class starship, but through bad clicking (and maybe some glitchyness?) I was given a Constitution class starship. OK, not a big deal, the main thing is that I now have an additional photon torpedo tube that I can use
Gears of War 2 | Done
Well, that didn't take long ;-) 20 days after I started Gears of War 2, it's now complete! I got Gears of War 2 as part of the Gears of War Triple Pack last Christmas (I've been working my way through other games first), and upon completing the original, this one was next in my xbox play queue. The game picks up at the end of the first Gears of War, where Delta squad comes back to deal some more punishment
I came across this last week on YouTube, a fictitious (and very humorous) newscast about the happenings of a flat (apartment). Now imagine how much fun we could have if we had a "insertYourDepartment News" or "Cubicle News" ;-)
My first MMO: Star Trek Online
So, I guess I can’t claim that I am not playing an MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) game any longer. I must confess, it was all a matter of the right theme, and the right price in order to get me to play an MMO game. World of Warcraft as a theme didn’t do it for me, and the subscription wasn’t really to my liking (considering that given my luck, whenever I pay for a subscription,
I just came across this TED video (in a workshop I am taking). This short video was pretty good! Going from Human Gatekeepers (of information) to Algorithmic Gatekeepers.
Microsoft's Surface Announcement
Fascinating news from Microsoft, finally pulling an Apple!I am looking forward to the Windows 8 Surface tablet from Microsoft. If it's $500-600 (and it doesn't suck) I am more than happy to spend my own cash for it ;-)
The numbers behind copyright Math
This was a pretty interesting TED talk that I listened to while on the way to work last week
Java Life rap song
ROFL...Reminds me of "I'm on a boat"... puts a smile on your face in the morning :-)
Greeks and the Financial crisis
A Sky News documentary I found on the interwebs on the topic of the Greek financial crisis. Commentary to follow...
TMNT Pizza Taste Test
Man, this looks pretty nasty, I don't know why anyone would do this (must be avid TMNT fans).
Time Machine (Mouse Trap Style!)
OK, so they skipped some events, but this is still quite an amazing contraption!
Splinter Cell: Conviction - some thoughts [spoilers]
It's been a couple of weeks since I completed the single player missions on Splinter Cell: Conviction (I guess I have to find someone to do co-op missions with now, lol). My overall impression of the game is fairly positive. I really liked the game play, it was reminiscent of previous Splinter Cell games, but it did manage to push the envelope a tad bit further (in a good way). The
Hello IT, Have you tried turning it off and on again?
I love the IT crowd, it's a pretty funny show and it almost had an American version (which could have stunk, but the pilot looked good). Tomorrow will be my first day back in IT - should be fun (no, I won't be telling people to turn it off and on again...well, unless it's really needed ;-) )
Official Language of the U.S. finally named!
and yes, this is humor...Incomprehensible Shouting Named Official U.S. Language @ Yahoo! Video
A pretty funny mock-trailer for a British Movie.Someone once said that Americans and the Brits were separated by a common language - it just goes to show you that language isn't the end-all-be-all of national identity :-)
The other day I came across an interesting news report from the Australian news show dateline (click here to view video). The news segment was actually particularly interesting, because it's about 99 superheroes (alluding to the 99 names of God in Islam) from many diverse backgrounds that are fighting evil in the world (one of those evils I guess I religious fundamentalism).I highly recommend that
Floppy drive w/ legs!
Well, this is retro!A floppy drive that grows some legs to avoid spilling liquids (that invade from the bottom - top invading liquids are still a problem) ;-)I haven't used a floppy disk or a floppy drive in close to 10 years now so I took this to be more of an art installation rather than something of actual use :-)Floppy Legs Portable Hard Drive from James Chambers on Vimeo.
Dead Snow - Campiness to the max!
OK, so this past week the wife decided to try out Netflix. I've been avoiding Netflix because I don't want yet another recurring charge on my stack of bills - somehow recurring charges are there, but I tend to not use the service. Seeing how summer is upon us, I won't be having any courses to keep me late (or require me to do homework) and that most people will be hitting our public libraries for
The iPad video, as captioned by Google - in GREEK
I came across this story from Engadget. If you head over to YouTube you can access some beta features such as automatic captioning of videos and automatic translation of said videos. Now, I had never viewed the iPad intro video, so this was all new to me. I clicked on the Closed Captioning to enable it and the English was somewhat amusing. The fun really kicked in when I clicked on Greek translation.
I'm on a Mac
Well, Here's a spoof of a spoof!SNL (Saturday Night Live) had a spoof of songs that use autotune called "I'm on a boat". Well, now we have a spoof of that spoof called "I'm on a Mac". The guy in the "PC-Pain" role looks like the "Human Being" mascot in Community (the NBC show - which it turns out has a mock website!)
Mario out of his element
Well, it seems like Mario and Luigi are the butt of another joke - and who can blame college humor? The Mario brothers are venerable icons of our youth (and as such are probably getting more than their fair share of mockery). In this episode Mario and Luigi are no longer in the Mushroom Kingdom...See more funny videos and funny pictures at CollegeHumor.
Family Guy + Windows 7 = Very Funny!
I was browsing my RSS feeds over the long thanksgiving weekend and I came across some Windows 7-Family Guy crossovers. They were quite funny! Have a look (if you haven't already seen them that is)
Matrix - Chaplin style
Speaking of the Matrix, I came across this video through Pestaola.gr a week or two ago. I don't know if this is an actual Charle Chaplin film, or if it's been made to look like one - but it's a retro reimagining of the Matrix. How would the matrix have looked like if it was shot during the era of the silent film? Well have a look :-) (very entertaining if you are into silent cinema)
Google History - in 2 minutes
I came across this video of the 11 years of Google's existence.I have to say that I really like the production value of this video! It's really nicely executed!
Poking fun at online education
Don't get me wrong, there are institutions out there that are credible (and accredited) institutions of learning that have online branches for students who are far away, or have jobs and can't drop everything to pursue their education. But there are cases of diploma mills that grant MBAs to dogs how is it not easy to poke fun at online institutions? :-) This video is from last week's Saturday Night
A few years back I had gone to an academic symposium on Tablet PCs of all things. One of the marketing professors had this ad as an example of something he used in his class. I remember that he said that this ad was so popular that the ad firm decided to pull the video off the internet and start asking for hefty royalties to use it.Recently I found it on youtube and it brought back memories of superbowls
Mac vs. PC vs. Linux
I was browsing the interwebs last week to find some Mac v. PC v. Linux clips that I had seen a while back and ran into this one.Pretty funny, if you ask me :-)
Here's a little friday humor for all of you :-)
Here's a pretty cool video of the Parthenon through time - by Costas Gavras
I found this little video on TUAW earlier this week.I think it's quite funny - and probably true. TUAW had it rated NSFW but I don't think it's a problem (unless your work place prohibits the colloquial word for feces)
Oh the French, is there anything they don't do?This was a nice little video of a Mario Kart game in real life.
