Far Cry 6 trailer
Another Ubisoft trailer, this time for Far Cry 6. I finished Far Cry 2 a while back, and went back to the original before I retired my Xbox 360. I guess I need to catch up with the games (probably after my dissertation is done). Giancarlo Esposito makes for a good bad guy (at least in this trailer).

Anyway - Watchdogs Legion is coming out sometime this year and the cinematic trailer looks pretty good! There's something very "V for Vendetta" about this game.

One of the games that I've been playing periodically while watching TV, is Assassin's Creed Rebellion. The game is a mobile strategy RPG with all the regular fixings of a free-to-play game: a limited in-game currency that you use to play missions. The currency replenishes at fixed time intervals, or you can pay to get more of it ahead of the full replenishment time. The game draws from the story of

When I was a kid, I rather enjoyed playing double dragon on my monochrome Gameboy, and it always seemed like a fun game - even though I never think I beat the original. Since it was practically free to try on my Xbox, I thought: why not?On the surface the game seems like a nice reboot of the original. Updated graphics,

Assassin's Creed: Revelations by Oliver BowdenMy rating: 5 of 5 stars This was a good ending to the Ezio storyline (and it wrapped up the Altair line as well). It follows the events of the game with the same name, but I think the author adds some more details to fill out the story. I like that they've also added the events of the short film "embers" in this book, but again - lack of modern-day

I rather enjoyed the first Guacamelle, so since Guacamelee 2 was available on GamePass, I thought - why not? This sequel picks up the story after the first one ends, and it's not just a rehash or reskin of the first one, but rather it adds a variety of new game mechanics, such as being able to launch yourself from different areas of the wall so you can hurl over dangers on the ground or reach new heights.

It's been over 10 years since I played the game, so this was a fair memory jogging device of things that occurred in Ezio's timeline in that second game. Part II of the Splinter Cell fan film was released this past week with 20 minutes more of the prequel story. It was an interesting video to watch (and now I'm waiting for Part III which I assume wraps up the story), but some of the dialogue seemed to be a little odd for the character of Sam Fisher and it sounded a little more like a generic action hero. Perhaps we can write it off as this being a
Far Cry 2 | Done!
Sunday, Jan 14 2018 12:05 | Action, Entertainment, farcry, shootEmUp, ubisoft, video games, VideoGames, XBOX
Last semester I began to play Far Cry 2 on my xbox 360 on my free time (free time, LOL - I suppose that's why it took this long to complete the game :p) I got the game as part of a far cry pack a few winters ago, and with the pile of 360 games becoming smaller and smaller, this series was next on my list. Far Cry (the original) wasn't available at the time, and it seems that the stories
xbox year in review
I was going to title this the Gaming year in review, but I've done some gaming on UPlay (the Assassin's Creed Chronicles), on Android, and on Steam which don't have fancy infographics for me. So, here is what I ended up playing on xbox :-) No surprise that most games are shooters. I did enjoy Bayonetta (and had I persisted I would have racked up more hours on it), but one can only get so frustrated
Mine! Mine! Mine!
With the new Kramp'Ikri event on star trek online this season came a new accolade to collect: mine, mine, mine! I was aiming to earn this before Christmas hit (and I started working more on my dissertation)...and mission (just) accomplished! In the Kramp'Ihri event (usually comes along twice per hour) when you attack the Kramp'ihri, one of the things that he tosses at you (from time to time)
A castlevania christmas
A little humor found this past weekend on Kotaku's Sunday Comics (especially for those Castlevania fans) :-)
Winter Wonderland is here!

One of my favorite seasonal STO events is here: Q's winter wonderland - where mischievous Q transports you to a...ermmm...winter wonderland...complete with winter events, winter clothing, and a new limited edition ship that you can claim. The Kramp'IhrThis year's addition to the game is the Kramp'Ihr - melding human winter-time monsters like the Krampus with Klingon undead (the Fekh'Ihr). It
A game plan for playing games
A little humor from last week's gamercat. I think I went through the 'must play every game' phase when I was in middle school, I've slowly paired it down to the 'I only have so much time, what do I want to play?' :-) The urge to play (or at least try) them all though is still there :)
Review: Prepare to Meet Thy Doom: And More True Gaming Stories
Saturday, Nov 18 2017 01:00 | audiobooks, Books, Entertainment, goodreads, review, Social Media, Social Networks, video games, VideoGames
Prepare to Meet Thy Doom: And More True Gaming Stories by David KushnerMy rating: 4 of 5 stars This was an interesting collection of short stories on video games. It is by no means comprehensive, but it was interesting to read nevertheless. It's a good, short, read for people interested in video games and how they impact (and are impacted by) society. I think this book spent a little too
Mario's worst enemies

A little humor from last week's Nerdrage. Mario's most recent enemy seems very...pedestrian :-)
Bayonetta | Done*
Well... I guess I'm done with it not in the "I've completed the game" aspect but rather, "I got to a point and got tired of it" :p . A month or so ago I thought I'd start Bayonetta on the xbox. Not that I have a ton of time on my hands with the dissertation proposal going on, but hey, it should have been a fun diversion. In the game you play as...you guess it...Bayonetta. A
Assassin's Creed Origins: Launch trailer
Wednesday, Oct 25 2017 11:40 | Assassins Creed, Entertainment, trailer, video games, VideoGames, XBOX
Even though I am 3 games behind in this series (and a whole generation of consoles behind), I am looking forward to eventually playing this game :-). I wonder if we see aliens come down and land/crashland on earth in ancient Egyptian times, or if we're dealing with the the fallout of discovering the ancient artifacts at this period in history :)
You can't please everyone
A little humor from this weekend's video game related comics :-)
Death of Halo
I came across this video on Reddit the other day. I thought it would actually be a much more in-depth analysis of the game series, but it just seems like a whole lot of kvetching about Halo 5. Since I don't yet have an xbox one I can't really say much about Halo 5, but Halo 4 wasn't really all that bad - if I remember correctly.
Launch trailer - Wolfenstein New Colossus
Wednesday, Oct 18 2017 11:03 | Entertainment, politics, trailer, video games, VideoGames, wolfenstein, XBOX, youtube
The launch trailer for the next Wolfenstein game, a game that picks up where the previous game left off - with a Nazi occupied american continent, is now available. So many games to play once I am done with my dissertation ;-). Make American Nazi-Free Again!
I came across this comic strip a week or so ago (but of course I forgot to post). It reminded me of my own (sometimes misplaced) nostalgia for older games. They were marvelous for their time, but really hard to go back to these days (unless you are very persistent).
Street Fighter V arcade trailer
Friday, Oct 6 2017 12:44 | arcade, Entertainment, steam, streetFighter, trailer, video games, VideoGames
It's hard to believe that it's been 30 years since Street Fighter was originally released... I am also surprised that there is no Xbox One release for the game. I guess I will be playing it on Steam...(at some point in the way way way future)
Max Payne - 16 years later
Hard to believe that 16 years have passed since this game kicked off! Yes, even though I just finished this series of games (recently...within the last 6 months?) it's interesting to hear a retrospective :-)
Halo Wars | Done!
This past weekend (and after about 20 hours of playtime) I finished Halo Wars on the xbox 360. I've been kind of avoiding Halo Wars because it's an RTS game (real time strategy) and I haven't really gotten very much into an RTS since Warcraft II: The tides of darkness (which I played back in 1996 on my Performa 635). In this game, unlike most other Halo games, your protagonist is just a regular

Well, in a couple of weeks Raptr is pulling the plug on the video-game social network which originally aimed to bring together a more unified view of gamers by allowing people to track the amount of time they put into playing games, showing off their achievements outside of closed and platform-specific views, and bringing people who play similar games together. I actually liked this quite a
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory | Done
Saturday, Sep 9 2017 13:39 | Action, Entertainment, splinterCell, ubisoft, video games, VideoGames, XBOX
[Spoilers] My quest to complete all current Splinter Cell games is complete! Last week (right before the semester start) I got to finish the last of the original Splinter Cell trilogy on the xbox. The game was originally released for the original xbox, but though the magic of backward compatibility I played this on my 360. This game played fairly well in compatibility mode. The compatibility
PS Vita revival? :p
Wednesday, Sep 6 2017 09:00 | Entertainment, gamercat, Humor, Playstation, Technology, video games, VideoGames, vita
I love the whipping that the Playstation Vita gets from time to time ;-). It's not that I didn't want the system to succeed, but between the lack of support and the many proprietary features...well it was begging to be on top of the dirt pile :-)
Awesome, awesome, cross-over!
Monday, Aug 28 2017 01:30 | Assassins Creed, crossover, Sci-Fi, Social Networks, Stargate, video games, VideoGames
Last week on Reddit I came across this image, which makes for an interesting cross over between the Assassin's Creed universe and the Stargate University. The next game in the Assassin's Creed series hits the consoles this fall and (as the name suggests) it goes back to the start of the Assassins (and probably the Templars), and the aliens who posed as gods... The origins take place in Roman
Bugsy is back!
I don't fully get this comic strip, but the funny thing is that I recognized the character (Bugsy) even though I've only really played about 5 minutes of the game on someone else's console...around 20 years ago.
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow | Done
Continuing with my exploration of "the classics" (of two console generations ago), I've been playing Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. The game originally came out for the original xbox, and I've been playing it on backward compatibility. I didn't really notice any hickups in the single player game. The title comes from the main bad guy of the series, Sadono, who calls his sleeper cells
From last week's gamercat, a commentary on the stupid game (on mobile) of Magickarp jump... (yes, it's stupid - as stupid as Office Space: Idle Profits)
Cultural archiving of video games
This is the type of cool stuff I see that makes me want to be an archivist ;-) That said, this type of hacking (both the hardware and software kind) is way beyond me. The following video is of someone who is hacking the Sega Saturn (whose optical drives are slowly failing) so that the games can be preserved for future generations to come :-)
The Crystal Method - Name of the Game
Sunday, Jul 16 2017 10:00 | #musicrewind, Entertainment, Humor, Music, splinterCell, video games, VideoGames
From the Splinter Cell soundtrack (and also the intro song for the first splinter cell). I didn't find an actual music video for this but here is a fan made video using the last game in the series (Blacklist). I actually don't remember hearing this on the radio back in the day, I've only known it as a game soundtrack.
Metroid: Samus Returns
Tuesday, Jun 27 2017 17:19 | 3DS, E3, Entertainment, GameBoy, metroid, nintendo, trailer, video games, VideoGames
One of the games I forgot to look for a trailer for last week was Metroid: Samus Returns, which is a modern version of Metroid II which came out in 1992 (25 years ago!!!) for the original GameBoy. A good friend of mine had this game (and had beat it). As was common back then, we traded game cartridges and I tried to beat this game by starting at the beginning, but I found it frustrating.
Resident evil, all wrapped up
This past weekend I took the opportunity to wrap up the resident evil movie collection and saw Resident Evil: Retribution, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. I had seen Resident Evil: Afterlife in the theaters in 2010, but I had been putting off the rest. All movies pick up from another another (well, at least the last three did), so I think they are better seen consecutively :-).Resident

Some really nice looking games announced by Nintendo at E3 yesterday. Some on the switch, some on the 3DS. Assassin's Creed Origins
Monday, Jun 12 2017 07:44 | Assassins Creed, Entertainment, trailer, ubisoft, video games, VideoGames, XBOX, youtube
Yesterday, at this year's E3 conference, we got new of the next Assassin's Creed. I guess the rumors (or wild wishes?) from some fans came true: Old Egypt (looks like Roman times) is now the setting of the next game which will chronicle the beginning of the brotherhood. Can't wait! Wonder if it will have an Ancient Aliens vibe ;-)

The game is based on the game which has the similar name from a little over 20 years ago, by developed BullFrog. The original syndicate game was a DOS and MacOS game (I am pretty sure it was on the Amiga as well) where the player started their own corporation with the aim

Throwing money at Nintendo...
Tuesday, May 16 2017 01:30 | comics, Entertainment, gamercat, Humor, nintendo, video games, VideoGames
From last week's gamercat... As much as I want to throw money at Nintendo for the switch, I can't justify the cost and game availability (and cost thereof). As a child of the 90s though....Nintendo! (i.e. irrational behaviors at times)
Holy Chalupa, Batman! After close to 5 years of playing this Star Trek Online (since it went Free to Play basically) my primary character (Tolya Kotrolya) has finally maxed out all of his commendations! Star Trek Online: Season 13 - Escalation
Tuesday, May 2 2017 01:30 | Entertainment, MMORPG, Sci-Fi, StarTrek, video games, VideoGames, Windows
Escalation hit the interwebs last week, and having played a bit this weekend it's not bad! The Smoke & Mirrors mission reminded me a little of Star Wars (the aesthetic), and a little bit of Captain Planet (the "don't mess up your planet by polluting, Kids!)I played a bit in the competitive warzone queues and the space one is definitely my favorite or the two. The ground missions (invisible
Battlefield 4 | Done!
Saturday, Apr 29 2017 01:30 | Action, Battlefield, Entertainment, shootEmUp, video games, VideoGames, XBOX
The other day I wrapped up the campaign part of Battlefield 4 (which is really the only part of most games I play). I was originally thinking that it would pick up from Battlefield 3, but this game seems to be (more or less) self contained. With the exception of meeting "dima" in one of the stages in the middle part of the game. Dima being one of the characters involved in the previous
Sour grapes, gamer cat!
I agree that the VR stuff costs a lot of money, but given a compelling game, and a compelling price, I'd play those games :-). From last week's gamer cat comic.
Battlefield 3 | Done
Saturday, Apr 22 2017 01:00 | Action, Battlefield, CallOfDuty, Entertainment, video games, VideoGames, XBOX
Once I finished off Max Payne 3, I dove deeply into another game of a similar genre, Battlefield 3. The campaign side of the game (which is basically what I play since I am not a networked player for most things) was rather short comparative to other games, but if I were to compare the game to games of the same genre (such as the previous two Battlefield games I played and the Call of Duty games
Max Payne 3 | Done!
A week or so ago I completed Max Payne 3, the most recent game in the Max Payne series of games. This game trades in the comic book feel of the first two games for a more new (or trendy?" cinematic feel with game cutscenes and voice over by none other than Max himself. The game starts off with Max (at the end of the game) doing some introspection, a "how the hell did I get here?" type of

STO is down for maintenance. Last night the First Contact event was hard to get into, which I assume is one of the things being looked at. Healing your enemies would make for some really long battles - but this gives me a good idea for a console:

Max Payne 2 | Done!
Continuing on the theme of going through video games that I've wanted to play (but haven't), the next game that I completed was Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. This game was originally released on the original xbox (you know, the one before the xbox 360), and it is backward compatible on the 360, so I decided to take it for a spin. [SPOILERS]The story of Max Payne 2 picks up a little
Kingsway OS - the RPG OS
OK, not really an OS, but an RPG in the style of an old GUI OS... pretty interesting!
Joining the Breach
The Breach came back as an event queue in Star Trek Online last week. This comic sums up exactly how I felt about it. Although to be honest, it's much shorter, and the rewards seem better as compared to the original Breach queue, and I need to get enough Lukari marks to finish off that reputation... (original here)

A while back I had bought Max Payne 3 on super sale for my xbox 360, so I thought it a good idea to go back and play the previous two. Luckily Humble Bundle had it on super sale ($2?) so I got it for steam.Max is a
