You can't please everyone
A little humor from this weekend's video game related comics :-)
Death of Halo
I came across this video on Reddit the other day. I thought it would actually be a much more in-depth analysis of the game series, but it just seems like a whole lot of kvetching about Halo 5. Since I don't yet have an xbox one I can't really say much about Halo 5, but Halo 4 wasn't really all that bad - if I remember correctly.
Launch trailer - Wolfenstein New Colossus
Wednesday, Oct 18 2017 11:03 | Entertainment, politics, trailer, video games, VideoGames, wolfenstein, XBOX, youtube
The launch trailer for the next Wolfenstein game, a game that picks up where the previous game left off - with a Nazi occupied american continent, is now available. So many games to play once I am done with my dissertation ;-). Make American Nazi-Free Again!
I came across this comic strip a week or so ago (but of course I forgot to post). It reminded me of my own (sometimes misplaced) nostalgia for older games. They were marvelous for their time, but really hard to go back to these days (unless you are very persistent).
Street Fighter V arcade trailer
Friday, Oct 6 2017 12:44 | arcade, Entertainment, steam, streetFighter, trailer, video games, VideoGames
It's hard to believe that it's been 30 years since Street Fighter was originally released... I am also surprised that there is no Xbox One release for the game. I guess I will be playing it on Steam...(at some point in the way way way future)
Max Payne - 16 years later
Hard to believe that 16 years have passed since this game kicked off! Yes, even though I just finished this series of games (recently...within the last 6 months?) it's interesting to hear a retrospective :-)
Halo Wars | Done!
This past weekend (and after about 20 hours of playtime) I finished Halo Wars on the xbox 360. I've been kind of avoiding Halo Wars because it's an RTS game (real time strategy) and I haven't really gotten very much into an RTS since Warcraft II: The tides of darkness (which I played back in 1996 on my Performa 635). In this game, unlike most other Halo games, your protagonist is just a regular

Well, in a couple of weeks Raptr is pulling the plug on the video-game social network which originally aimed to bring together a more unified view of gamers by allowing people to track the amount of time they put into playing games, showing off their achievements outside of closed and platform-specific views, and bringing people who play similar games together. I actually liked this quite a
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory | Done
Saturday, Sep 9 2017 13:39 | Action, Entertainment, splinterCell, ubisoft, video games, VideoGames, XBOX
[Spoilers] My quest to complete all current Splinter Cell games is complete! Last week (right before the semester start) I got to finish the last of the original Splinter Cell trilogy on the xbox. The game was originally released for the original xbox, but though the magic of backward compatibility I played this on my 360. This game played fairly well in compatibility mode. The compatibility
PS Vita revival? :p
Wednesday, Sep 6 2017 09:00 | Entertainment, gamercat, Humor, Playstation, Technology, video games, VideoGames, vita
I love the whipping that the Playstation Vita gets from time to time ;-). It's not that I didn't want the system to succeed, but between the lack of support and the many proprietary features...well it was begging to be on top of the dirt pile :-)
Awesome, awesome, cross-over!
Monday, Aug 28 2017 01:30 | Assassins Creed, crossover, Sci-Fi, Social Networks, Stargate, video games, VideoGames
Last week on Reddit I came across this image, which makes for an interesting cross over between the Assassin's Creed universe and the Stargate University. The next game in the Assassin's Creed series hits the consoles this fall and (as the name suggests) it goes back to the start of the Assassins (and probably the Templars), and the aliens who posed as gods... The origins take place in Roman
Bugsy is back!
I don't fully get this comic strip, but the funny thing is that I recognized the character (Bugsy) even though I've only really played about 5 minutes of the game on someone else's console...around 20 years ago.
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow | Done
Continuing with my exploration of "the classics" (of two console generations ago), I've been playing Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. The game originally came out for the original xbox, and I've been playing it on backward compatibility. I didn't really notice any hickups in the single player game. The title comes from the main bad guy of the series, Sadono, who calls his sleeper cells
From last week's gamercat, a commentary on the stupid game (on mobile) of Magickarp jump... (yes, it's stupid - as stupid as Office Space: Idle Profits)
Cultural archiving of video games
This is the type of cool stuff I see that makes me want to be an archivist ;-) That said, this type of hacking (both the hardware and software kind) is way beyond me. The following video is of someone who is hacking the Sega Saturn (whose optical drives are slowly failing) so that the games can be preserved for future generations to come :-)
The Crystal Method - Name of the Game
Sunday, Jul 16 2017 10:00 | #musicrewind, Entertainment, Humor, Music, splinterCell, video games, VideoGames
From the Splinter Cell soundtrack (and also the intro song for the first splinter cell). I didn't find an actual music video for this but here is a fan made video using the last game in the series (Blacklist). I actually don't remember hearing this on the radio back in the day, I've only known it as a game soundtrack.
Metroid: Samus Returns
Tuesday, Jun 27 2017 17:19 | 3DS, E3, Entertainment, GameBoy, metroid, nintendo, trailer, video games, VideoGames
One of the games I forgot to look for a trailer for last week was Metroid: Samus Returns, which is a modern version of Metroid II which came out in 1992 (25 years ago!!!) for the original GameBoy. A good friend of mine had this game (and had beat it). As was common back then, we traded game cartridges and I tried to beat this game by starting at the beginning, but I found it frustrating.
Resident evil, all wrapped up
This past weekend I took the opportunity to wrap up the resident evil movie collection and saw Resident Evil: Retribution, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. I had seen Resident Evil: Afterlife in the theaters in 2010, but I had been putting off the rest. All movies pick up from another another (well, at least the last three did), so I think they are better seen consecutively :-).Resident

Wednesday, Jun 14 2017 14:41 | 3DS, E3, Entertainment, nintendo, supermario, Switch, trailer, video games, VideoGames
Some really nice looking games announced by Nintendo at E3 yesterday. Some on the switch, some on the 3DS. I love Terry Crews ;-) Now all this game needs is a Jake Peralta recruit haha.I wonder if I need an Xbox One X to run this. I seriously don't see a reason to buy an xbox one X over an xbox one S given my own gaming habits.
Assassin's Creed Origins
Monday, Jun 12 2017 07:44 | Assassins Creed, Entertainment, trailer, ubisoft, video games, VideoGames, XBOX, youtube
Yesterday, at this year's E3 conference, we got new of the next Assassin's Creed. I guess the rumors (or wild wishes?) from some fans came true: Old Egypt (looks like Roman times) is now the setting of the next game which will chronicle the beginning of the brotherhood. Can't wait! Wonder if it will have an Ancient Aliens vibe ;-)
STO summer event is upon us!
Next week the summer event starts in STO. Looks like a T6 Vorgon dreadnaught is the main prize (really wish I could get the first two summer ships that I never bothered getting....and not in a Phoenix pack!)

Recently I completed the game Syndicate on the xbox 360 (continuing to make my way though my backlog of games) :-). The game is based on the game which has the similar name from a little over 20 years ago, by developed BullFrog. The original syndicate game was a DOS and MacOS game (I am pretty sure it was on the Amiga as well) where the player started their own corporation with the aim
Castlevania - the TV Series!

Of Metal Gears and Fidget Spinners...
From this past week's Sunday Comics section of Kotaku - Snake talking about the evolution of the metal gear mech design, and news on fidget spinners (a fad of the mid 2017s for those future historians looking back).
Throwing money at Nintendo...
Tuesday, May 16 2017 01:30 | comics, Entertainment, gamercat, Humor, nintendo, video games, VideoGames
From last week's gamercat... As much as I want to throw money at Nintendo for the switch, I can't justify the cost and game availability (and cost thereof). As a child of the 90s though....Nintendo! (i.e. irrational behaviors at times)
Holy Chalupa, Batman! After close to 5 years of playing this Star Trek Online (since it went Free to Play basically) my primary character (Tolya Kotrolya) has finally maxed out all of his commendations! The elusive commendation was the "recruitment" commendation which for the Federation folk it seems pretty hard to get (unless you want to sacrifice a whole bunch of uncommon and rare Duty Offices
Star Trek Online: Season 13 - Escalation
Tuesday, May 2 2017 01:30 | Entertainment, MMORPG, Sci-Fi, StarTrek, video games, VideoGames, Windows
Escalation hit the interwebs last week, and having played a bit this weekend it's not bad! The Smoke & Mirrors mission reminded me a little of Star Wars (the aesthetic), and a little bit of Captain Planet (the "don't mess up your planet by polluting, Kids!)I played a bit in the competitive warzone queues and the space one is definitely my favorite or the two. The ground missions (invisible
Battlefield 4 | Done!
Saturday, Apr 29 2017 01:30 | Action, Battlefield, Entertainment, shootEmUp, video games, VideoGames, XBOX
The other day I wrapped up the campaign part of Battlefield 4 (which is really the only part of most games I play). I was originally thinking that it would pick up from Battlefield 3, but this game seems to be (more or less) self contained. With the exception of meeting "dima" in one of the stages in the middle part of the game. Dima being one of the characters involved in the previous
Sour grapes, gamer cat!
I agree that the VR stuff costs a lot of money, but given a compelling game, and a compelling price, I'd play those games :-). From last week's gamer cat comic.
Battlefield 3 | Done
Saturday, Apr 22 2017 01:00 | Action, Battlefield, CallOfDuty, Entertainment, video games, VideoGames, XBOX
Once I finished off Max Payne 3, I dove deeply into another game of a similar genre, Battlefield 3. The campaign side of the game (which is basically what I play since I am not a networked player for most things) was rather short comparative to other games, but if I were to compare the game to games of the same genre (such as the previous two Battlefield games I played and the Call of Duty games
Max Payne 3 | Done!
A week or so ago I completed Max Payne 3, the most recent game in the Max Payne series of games. This game trades in the comic book feel of the first two games for a more new (or trendy?" cinematic feel with game cutscenes and voice over by none other than Max himself. The game starts off with Max (at the end of the game) doing some introspection, a "how the hell did I get here?" type of
Competitive Wargames Reputation - STO

Well... Just as I finished one reputation (Lukari), and have enough marks to get the gear...and now there is a new reputation coming along. The artisanal sound system
When I logged into Star Trek Online I heard a bunch or BLIM, BLORP, SWOOOOSH sounds. I thought Q was at it again. Well, it turns out that it was just the new artisanal sonification system :p (Happy April Fools)
Best patch note ever!
Friday, Mar 31 2017 11:13 | Ancient Greece, Entertainment, MMORPG, Mythology, StarTrek, StarWars, SWTOR, video games, VideoGames
STO is down for maintenance. Last night the First Contact event was hard to get into, which I assume is one of the things being looked at. I loved this patch note today: Resolved an issue where the Heavy Escort Railgun was healing enemies instead of damaging them. Healing your enemies would make for some really long battles - but this gives me a good idea for a console:

I saw, on the the STO blog, that First Contact day is almost upon us! For the event, STO will be doing the following:Captains who participate will search the area for useful parts, just like Cochrane scavenged the pieces for the Phoenix. Max Payne 2 | Done!
Continuing on the theme of going through video games that I've wanted to play (but haven't), the next game that I completed was Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. This game was originally released on the original xbox (you know, the one before the xbox 360), and it is backward compatible on the 360, so I decided to take it for a spin. [SPOILERS]The story of Max Payne 2 picks up a little
Kingsway OS - the RPG OS
OK, not really an OS, but an RPG in the style of an old GUI OS... pretty interesting!
Joining the Breach
The Breach came back as an event queue in Star Trek Online last week. This comic sums up exactly how I felt about it. Although to be honest, it's much shorter, and the rewards seem better as compared to the original Breach queue, and I need to get enough Lukari marks to finish off that reputation... (original here)

Saturday, Feb 25 2017 17:00 | Action, Entertainment, PC, shootEmUp, video games, VideoGames, Windows
A while back I had bought Max Payne 3 on super sale for my xbox 360, so I thought it a good idea to go back and play the previous two. Even though I have the original xbox discs for Max Payne, and Max Payne 2, it seems that the backward compatibility was throwing up some hiccups for the original Max Payne. Luckily Humble Bundle had it on super sale ($2?) so I got it for steam.Max is a

Well, this game didn't take all that long to complete the campaign side of the game! What do I do in-between class stuff? Obviously play games ;-) This was my first foray into a Battlefield game. A temporal captain!

Finally! I've now become an old school temporal captain ;-)About five years ago when I first started playing Star Trek online what I really wanted was to fly around in a Wells Class temporal science vessel (and sport the 29th century uniform). The problem? The Wells was a lockbox ship, and before I knew the odds of getting one I ended up opening a whole lot of temporal lockboxes with nothing
Wolfenstein: the New Order | Done!
Wednesday, Jan 11 2017 00:30 | Action, DOS, Entertainment, review, video games, VideoGames, wolfenstein, XBOX
Compared to how long it took me to finish Bully, Wolfenstein: the new order on the xbox 360 took almost no time to complete. The game is a fast-paced first person shooter (action obviously) which takes place in an alternative 1960 timeline in which Nazi Germany has won World War II and has gone on to become the super power of the planet. It is a bit like the TV show the man in the high
Ubisoft was having a sale on the UPlay store recently. Since an Xbox One is not in my near future, I decided to get the Assassin's Gold Pack (on sale of course) which included both Unity and Syndicate. Bully (Scholarship Edition) | Done
Well...it took about a year but it is done! I had started Bully (a game which my friend Rob gave me before he left for lands far far away) last year just before classes started (EDDE 804 to be more specific). While my alts in STO don't have a ton of ships, my main character has had both the main shipyard and the dry docks filled to capacity, leading to an inability of testing out new ships. I was not convinced that I would be starting up a new character for this expansion, but after this trailer I am pumped! I may just create a new UFP character, do the faction specific missions, and then just use DOFF missions to level up to level 60. I might even skip most missions that I've done (at least) 4 times already. I guess this character falls into the tertiary category because

Risa and the Winter Wonderland are both seasonal favorites of mine :-) As much as people look down upon playing "space barbie" (i.e. focusing on how your character and ship look instead of DPS), I am looking forward to rounding out the summer outfits for

Nice! There is a follow up...of some sort, for the game Watchdogs. It seems that this game is not following the story of Aidan Pierce, the protagonist of the first Watchdogs. It also isn't taking place in Chicago, but rather it takes place in San Fransisco. I think I'll have a ton of games to play once I am done dissertating if this keeps up ;-)
Mandalorian's Revenge (SWTOR)
I am still working on the original content (haven't even gotten to expansions!), but the new chapter coming in a few days is looking interesting!

In my quest to play through as many Assassin's Creed games as possible, I got a Nintendo 3DS last year (well, I've been wanting one for a while and this was just a good excuse), and hit eBay for cheap (used) copies of the game. There have been 2 Assassin's Creed games for the DS, one taking place in Altair's time, and one in Ezio's time. I chose to play Ezio first, and go with the other

Engadget did find one of these layout around the video is below. Pretty cool to actually see one. The rumors behind this (and the lack of internet to verify this info) also made

Still going on with SWTOR...
You know... When I started playing SWTOR, I didn't think the game would be this long! After playing Defiance for a bit (still playing, but not as much - maybe an hour or so per week), I thought that SWTOR would be light on story, and heavy on the end-game stuff (that requires people to subscribe for goodies). I am pretty happy to report that there is still a ton of story left in this game!I
Star Trek Online: Agents of Yesterday
Woah! The third major expansion to star trek online has been announced! Taking advantage of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, Star Trek Online is doing a TOS themed expansion. This sounds pretty exciting as players can start a character from the start and explore strange new worlds through that lens. One of the starter packs also comes packed with ships from the TOS era, as well as some
Assassin's Creed Identity
I don't know how this escaped my notice (maybe too busy with school and everything else) but there is a new (to me) mobile game that was released this year. I am actually wondering if there will be any more Nintendo 3DS games coming out that are assassin's creed games. Seems to me that this would be a good candidate (along with the Chronicles lines of games).
Woohoo! EGO upgrades based on XP :)
I like Defiance (the game), but as someone who usually plays solo, and has not joined a clan, leveling up can be a pain since leveling up (EGO level) was tied to pursuits that you did throughout the game (kill this many of this, level of that many of that, do all the missions in this arc, and so on). That works fine for those who want to pursue those game goals, but for me, as a solo point-and-shoot

After 3 years of playing Ingress on my phone (on and off), I've made it to level 9. Technically speaking I had already earned enough points to be promoted to level 9 several months ago, but since my achievements weren't keeping up with my XP I only now got a silver badge (in distance traversed I think) that allowed me to level up. I guess I'll need to go out and do some event days. I

I am starting to like to Call of Duty franchise :-) I have not played their World War II games, mostly because I don't like that era for this type of game, but who knows, once I am done with whatever I can play on my xbox 360 from this series, I might go back and revisit the first 3 CoD games (plus world at war), which take place in WWII.Anyway, In Call of Duty Black Ops II story is told partly
I've been looking to get some "must have" Gameboy Advance games since I just got myself a refurbished unit back in the fall. When the GBA originally came out I thought that consoles were not that great of an investment, so I was more into computer gaming (the little I could have on the Mac in the days of Classic MacOS). This is a fun little video dissecting the Nintendo GameBoy. Trying out SWTOR
Jedi KnightJust before the Christmas break I decided to give Star Wars: The Old Republic a try. I am definitely much more of a Star Trek fan, but I decided to give this game a try anyway. It is free-to-play, so this was definitely a draw. The game takes place a long long long time ago, in a galaxy far far far away. As a player you have the ability to pick from six classes:

While we still have a few more weeks left in 2015, and I probably will finish one more book (the one I have in progress and listening to during my commutes these days), this is a mostly accurate view of my 2015 reading list. One year I made my goal to read 30 books in a year - failed it. Since then I've decided to keep it simple and focus on reading a book a month. If I go over that
I was meaning for that to sound a bit like the iconic "khaaaaaan" yell, but oh well - fell flat a bit. Not talking about Nim Chimpsky here, the famous chimp from the language study at Columbia, but rather Num Shandu, the Castithan general who lead the charge on Defiance (and lost). Seems like he needed some cybernetics in order to get him back to working order again. In any case,

Woot! Mass Effect 4 trailer!
Well, for N7 Day (November 7th), EA released a trailer for the new Mass Effect game, apparently titled Mass Effect: Andromeda. Wonder what the game will bring!

Kinda stinks to be both sick and have a ton of homework when new content arrives for games that you like to play, but oh well - such is life :) This past week Season 11 of Star Trek Online was released with new exploratory content, previous chapter revamps, a new reputation system, and some new PvE queues. At last writing I was at an EGO rating of about 200, which apparently was a little problematic for beating Jackleg Joe, the boss of the last mission or Marin called Bullet for a Badman (which apparently is a Western movie title). In this mission I was stuck by not having enough capability to inflict damage on the enemies, so off I went

Here is a quick recap to help put the story in order for other fans of the franchise.

Just before 2014 is done I managed to make my way through Hitman: Blood Money, the last game in the Hitman HD Trilogy that I bought at the end of 2013. I think part of the reason that I really got through this game quickly was because I played it on Normal (7 saves, regular AI), but still I was mostly playing for the storyline and not the achievements which makes this sort of a speedrun for me.

About a year ago I bought the Hitman Trilogy HD for the xbox 360. It was a good deal and it seemed that Hitman was one of those games that many people have played and that people know about, so it was something that I should be playing to gain at least a passing familiarity with it.
