More Tardigrade news...

email update from STO - for those like me who got Lt. Tardigrade as their nouveau tomagochi ;-)Thanks to some generous donations from the local shipyard, the Lieutenant now had his very own starship bridge, of sorts, in his enclosure. We managed to secure three decommissioned consoles, and his very own Captain's chair. It's a little beat up, to be sure, but he doesn't seem to mind, and he's been running

Last fall, in what seems like the heels of the "Victory is Life" expansion some new content dropped on STO, titled "Age of Discovery" which seems to be content for the game that runs concurrent with the show that started yesterday evening, and perhaps with the on-going IDW series on Star Trek Discovery. With this new content you start off as a cadet in the Discovery era of Star Trek
Xbox year in review
Thursday, Jan 3 2019 05:00 | Assassins Creed, Defiance, Entertainment, Technology, video games, VideoGames, XBOX, YearInReview
The year-in-review notifications that various social media sites provide can be quite fun. This year's year-in-review for xbox is a custom made snowball (too bad you can't order one!) based on the various statistics from your gaming preferences. It seems like 2018 for me was the year of Assassin's Creed, with over 200 hours logged into Origins Syndicate, and Unity. While this might
Return of Castle Wolfenstein | Done!
Before playing the latest and greatest in Wolfenstein gaming, I ended up (last summer) playing through an original xbox era game (thanks, Backward Compatibility!) titled "Return to Castle Wolfenstein". This game was originally released back in 2001, and I had tried playing a demo of it on my Power Mac G3 at the time, but the thing was so choppy I, disappointed, put it down (and totally forgot
Halo Infinite - what am I missing?
Another E3 2018 announcement - Microsoft's Halo Infinite. I've liked all Halo games I've played up to now, even though I have not completed all of them, and I have yet to play Halo 5: Guardians, so I was pumped about Halo: Infinite. I didn't know it was coming, I was surprised and elated at the existence of an announcement trailer...and then it tell flat. The trailer tells me nothing of

Tuesday, Jun 12 2018 03:30 | Assassins Creed, E3, Entertainment, Greece, trailer, ubisoft, VideoGames, XBOX, youtube
Just by luck yesterday YouTube suggested the Ubisoft livestream from E3 (oh internet overlords, you know me so well!), and I tuned in just as the trailer for Assassin's Creed Odyssey came on screen. I love the trailer, I love that I am able to pick a character, I love that it's going to be set in Greece during the peloponnesian war, I think I like the Bioware RPGness of the game. There
Cyberpunk 2077 trailer
Seems like some big announcements were made today and yesterday at this year's E3. I hadn't even seen anything regarding this game in the game press (not that I was paying particular attention) but this game looks likeit could be a lot of fun, wrapped up in an interesting story.
Victory is life is here!
Well, the fourth expansion of Star Trek Online, which brings us a sliver of the Gamma quadrant, gamma recruits, and the Jem'Hadar playable faction is here today! I had an opportunity to play a bit today as a new Jem'Hadar "first" (aka captain) under the name of Arak'Ouzo (yes having some fun with the name). The first couple of missions were quite fun to play, and flying a "bug-ship" is quite

The Ultimate History of Video Games: From Pong to Pokemon - The Story Behind the Craze That Touched Our Lives and Changed the World by Steven L. KentMy rating: 4 of 5 stars Not a bad book. I always expect something with the word "ultimate" in the title to be the one definitive source for all things for that topic, but that isn't always the case. Lots of good early history of companies (Coleco

Man...after close to 6 years of play this accolade is finally complete! The other day I had the Dabo table going at DS9 on STO while having my iPad read back articles to me (some supplemental readings for the dissertation). It's pretty mindless to click and bet on Dabo, so while reading I just kept hitting 'play'. Well - finally I hit the 1,000,000 mark! I've won 1,000,000

Friday, May 11 2018 02:00 | achievements, Entertainment, Film Noir, Steampunk, vampires, video games, VideoGames, XBOX
A game I was playing concurrently with Zombi was another freebie from the free with Gold program. This game was the Incredible Adventures of van Helsing III. I am not sure if it was integral to the game for me to play parts I and II (I didn't), but even if it were, this game stood pretty good on its own.The game takes place in the fictional eastern european city of Borgovia, and the main

The most recent game I finished (right before I headed off to the annual MTA conference the past two days) was Zombi on the XBOX One. This was originally a WiiU game (a horror game on the Nintendo???) but it made its way to the xbox a few years later. It's an ubisoft production and it's something I got for "free" by subscribing to Gold (since my membership is expiring soon I thought I
Overload is coming!
It took a while, but this kickstarter is almost here (to be released at the end of May). I haven't been playing the betas (even though my kickstarter pledge allows me to) to get totally immersed when it's released. It's been a while since I played a game of this sort (since Descent, actually!)
Assassin's Creed Unity - Mobile Companion | Done
Sunday, Apr 22 2018 11:55 | Android, Assassins Creed, Entertainment, mobile, video games, VideoGames
LOL, I am not sure why I am writing about the mobile companion app...but I am (so...deal with it? :p). Anyway, yesterday the final side-mission of the companion app cleared and I got all my little lovely check marks across the map of Paris. In this companion app you recruit Assassins from across Paris, and as you send them away on missions to control different locations in Paris

Recently, another game I 'completed' was Trials of the Blood Dragon. While I did get through the story of the game, I am not sure that this is one of those games that you 'complete'. When I got this game for free through xbox live 'games with gold' a number of months ago I thought that it was more of a Far Cry game, but it's basically a Trials game with Far Cry highlights. I had actually

I've been debating which game(s) to move onto next on the xbox now that Assassin's Creed Syndicate is (mostly) done. I realized the other day that the "free" games that we get on xbox live gold aren't really totally free. You can claim games for free when they are available, and you can enjoy them, for free, so long as you have an active xbox live gold membership. Considering that

Assassin's Creed Syndicate | Done!
Well... I should probably say "mostly done". There is the Jack The Ripper expansion story that I haven't played yet, but considering that it's almost a separate game, I thought I'd write about the core game (plus "the last maharaja" missions). So, after I finished Unity I jumped right on to Syndicate (and with the xbox spring sale going on now, I actually picked up Origins...but I think

I came across this comic on Reddit the other day. I both laughed, and wanted to throw a controller at the screen :p While I did want to complete all the option pursuits and co-ops and such, this is one issue that made me want to break the screen :-) Imagine trying to jump (or heck go down and not jump to a 'random' location) and being on a timer. eff this :p
Victory is Life! The next Star Trek Online expansion
"Victory is Life" is a saying of the Jem'Hadar, one of the subjugated races of the Dominion (...or is it "in the Dominion"?) who are, basically, the warriors of that alliance. It is also the name of the next expansion for Star Trek Online which is hitting PCs his coming summer (I sure hope it's not concurrent with the Summer Event on Risa!). I do find it a little odd that the developers chose

Assassin's Creed Unity | Done!
It's been a while since I last played an Assassin's Creed game on a console, owing mostly to the fact that I didn't have a current generation console to play the 'newest' games on. I think the wait was quite worth it, for a few reasons.Assassin's Creed Unity is the next game in the series after Assassin's Creed Rogue. Your main character is Arno Dorian. Looks like Defiance (the MMO) is getting an update. The updated version launches this summer and is called Defiance 2050. The television show took place starting in 2046, so I guess the developers might be moving the timeline a little forward (well, the show was 3 seasons long, so many it picks up the story after the show?). On the good side of things it seems like they are streamlining the

Splinter Cell: Part II
Sunday, Jan 21 2018 10:32 | Entertainment, FanFilm, splinterCell, ubisoft, video games, VideoGames, youtube
Part II of the Splinter Cell fan film was released this past week with 20 minutes more of the prequel story. It was an interesting video to watch (and now I'm waiting for Part III which I assume wraps up the story), but some of the dialogue seemed to be a little odd for the character of Sam Fisher and it sounded a little more like a generic action hero. Perhaps we can write it off as this being a

Last semester I began to play Far Cry 2 on my xbox 360 on my free time (free time, LOL - I suppose that's why it took this long to complete the game :p) I got the game as part of a far cry pack a few winters ago, and with the pile of 360 games becoming smaller and smaller, this series was next on my list. Far Cry (the original) wasn't available at the time, and it seems that the stories
xbox year in review
I was going to title this the Gaming year in review, but I've done some gaming on UPlay (the Assassin's Creed Chronicles), on Android, and on Steam which don't have fancy infographics for me. So, here is what I ended up playing on xbox :-) No surprise that most games are shooters. I did enjoy Bayonetta (and had I persisted I would have racked up more hours on it), but one can only get so frustrated
Mine! Mine! Mine!
With the new Kramp'Ikri event on star trek online this season came a new accolade to collect: mine, mine, mine! I was aiming to earn this before Christmas hit (and I started working more on my dissertation)...and mission (just) accomplished! A game plan for playing games
A little humor from last week's gamercat. I think I went through the 'must play every game' phase when I was in middle school, I've slowly paired it down to the 'I only have so much time, what do I want to play?' :-) The urge to play (or at least try) them all though is still there :)

Prepare to Meet Thy Doom: And More True Gaming Stories by David KushnerMy rating: 4 of 5 stars This was an interesting collection of short stories on video games. Well... I guess I'm done with it not in the "I've completed the game" aspect but rather, "I got to a point and got tired of it" :p . A month or so ago I thought I'd start Bayonetta on the xbox. Even though I am 3 games behind in this series (and a whole generation of consoles behind), I am looking forward to eventually playing this game :-). A little humor from this weekend's video game related comics :-)
Death of Halo
I came across this video on Reddit the other day. I thought it would actually be a much more in-depth analysis of the game series, but it just seems like a whole lot of kvetching about Halo 5. Since I don't yet have an xbox one I can't really say much about Halo 5, but Halo 4 wasn't really all that bad - if I remember correctly.

The launch trailer for the next Wolfenstein game, a game that picks up where the previous game left off - with a Nazi occupied american continent, is now available. So many games to play once I am done with my dissertation ;-). Make American Nazi-Free Again!
I came across this comic strip a week or so ago (but of course I forgot to post). It reminded me of my own (sometimes misplaced) nostalgia for older games. They were marvelous for their time, but really hard to go back to these days (unless you are very persistent).

This past weekend (and after about 20 hours of playtime) I finished Halo Wars on the xbox 360. I've been kind of avoiding Halo Wars because it's an RTS game (real time strategy) and I haven't really gotten very much into an RTS since Warcraft II: The tides of darkness (which I played back in 1996 on my Performa 635). Last week on Reddit I came across this image, which makes for an interesting cross over between the Assassin's Creed universe and the Stargate University. The next game in the Assassin's Creed series hits the consoles this fall and (as the name suggests) it goes back to the start of the Assassins (and probably the Templars), and the aliens who posed as gods... The origins take place in Roman

I don't fully get this comic strip, but the funny thing is that I recognized the character (Bugsy) even though I've only really played about 5 minutes of the game on someone else's console...around 20 years ago.
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow | Done
Continuing with my exploration of "the classics" (of two console generations ago), I've been playing Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. One of the games I forgot to look for a trailer for last week was Metroid: Samus Returns, which is a modern version of Metroid II which came out in 1992 (25 years ago!!!) for the original GameBoy. A good friend of mine had this game (and had beat it). As was common back then, we traded game cartridges and I tried to beat this game by starting at the beginning, but I found it frustrating.

This past weekend I took the opportunity to wrap up the resident evil movie collection and saw Resident Evil: Retribution, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. OK, not really an OS, but an RPG in the style of an old GUI OS... pretty interesting!
Joining the Breach
The Breach came back as an event queue in Star Trek Online last week. This comic sums up exactly how I felt about it. Although to be honest, it's much shorter, and the rewards seem better as compared to the original Breach queue, and I need to get enough Lukari marks to finish off that reputation... (original here)

Max Payne (PC) | Done!
Saturday, Feb 25 2017 17:00 | Action, Entertainment, PC, shootEmUp, video games, VideoGames, Windows
A while back I had bought Max Payne 3 on super sale for my xbox 360, so I thought it a good idea to go back and play the previous two. Even though I have the original xbox discs for Max Payne, and Max Payne 2, it seems that the backward compatibility was throwing up some hiccups for the original Max Payne. Luckily Humble Bundle had it on super sale ($2?) so I got it for steam.Max is a

Well, this game didn't take all that long to complete the campaign side of the game! What do I do in-between class stuff? Obviously play games ;-) This was my first foray into a Battlefield game. Even though I have Battlefield 3 and 4, I was intrigued by the cop mechanic where you can arrest people instead of blowing them to bits, which really gave you an incentive to play the game in

That title is a bit heavy on the sarcasm ;-)A new season of Star Trek Online has been announced, coming to us on PCs next week. The new season, titled "reckoning",continues the Lukari story arc, introduces the Tzenkethi (of Animated fame?), and of course introduces a new reputation titled "the Lukari restoration initiative", with new traits and gear you can get.I'll most likely get the gear
A temporal captain!
Wednesday, Jan 18 2017 08:21 | Entertainment, Games, MMORPG, online, StarTrek, video games, VideoGames
Finally! I've now become an old school temporal captain ;-)About five years ago when I first started playing Star Trek online what I really wanted was to fly around in a Wells Class temporal science vessel (and sport the 29th century uniform). The problem? The Wells was a lockbox ship, and before I knew the odds of getting one I ended up opening a whole lot of temporal lockboxes with nothing
Wolfenstein: the New Order | Done!
Wednesday, Jan 11 2017 00:30 | Action, DOS, Entertainment, review, video games, VideoGames, wolfenstein, XBOX
Compared to how long it took me to finish Bully, Wolfenstein: the new order on the xbox 360 took almost no time to complete. The game is a fast-paced first person shooter (action obviously) which takes place in an alternative 1960 timeline in which Nazi Germany has won World War II and has gone on to become the super power of the planet. It is a bit like the TV show the man in the high
Ubisoft was having a sale on the UPlay store recently. Since an Xbox One is not in my near future, I decided to get the Assassin's Gold Pack (on sale of course) which included both Unity and Syndicate. After about 2 days of downloading Unity (approximately 50GB) I discovered that the game is unplayable on my Surface Pro 3. Even on the lowest settings (which I was pretty content to
Bully (Scholarship Edition) | Done
Well...it took about a year but it is done! I had started Bully (a game which my friend Rob gave me before he left for lands far far away) last year just before classes started (EDDE 804 to be more specific). Xbox year-in-review, now with a crest!
With all of the social media sites doing year-in-review infographics from the data that they've collected from you over the period of the year, I thought I would check out xbox to see what sort of year-in-review they have in store. This year, along with the statistics that they provided me with, I got my own - customized and customizable gamer crest (presumably based on the games that I play).

I had started this game in Madrid, once I had finished with the first in the series (China), but being back home also means a lot less time for games ;-) In any case, picking away at it a little at a time means that progress was made in completing it (sounds like a parallel for dissertation writing, eh? ;-) ).The game follows Arbaaz Mir in Amritsar (India) in 1841, in the midst of a war between the

Need to wait for November 7th for more details, but this looks cool! I guess people were saved from the galaxy-reseting events of the original Mass Effect trilogy by going to another galaxy...
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer
A new call of duty game is coming out soon! (well it might be out, but without a current generation console I can't play it yet). This trailer looks good, and it appears to tackle the topic of alien invasion of earth :) I wonder if it keeps within the continuity of the previous CoD games I've played...

A while back, during a Humble Store sale, I got Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China (as well as India and Russia). Starship drydock clean-up
While my alts in STO don't have a ton of ships, my main character has had both the main shipyard and the dry docks filled to capacity, leading to an inability of testing out new ships. I was not convinced that I would be starting up a new character for this expansion, but after this trailer I am pumped! I may just create a new UFP character, do the faction specific missions, and then just use DOFF missions to level up to level 60. I might even skip most missions that I've done (at least) 4 times already. I guess this character falls into the tertiary category because

I was not expecting a game like this from UbiSoft (and, what the heck? is this blog turning into star trek all the time?!). In any case, this game seems quite interesting in terms of what it does with virtual reality. Also seeing Star Trek Alumni getting into the game and seeing their enthusiasm about this is pretty infectious ;-)I tend to be more of a solo player, even within MMOs

Hey! With the advent of a new expansion, coming later on this summer, we will have a new reputation! The Temporal Defense Reputation (how many reputations is that now?). I still have loads of time before I get an xbox one LOL. No rush.

Nice! There is a follow up...of some sort, for the game Watchdogs. It seems that this game is not following the story of Aidan Pierce, the protagonist of the first Watchdogs. It also isn't taking place in Chicago, but rather it takes place in San Fransisco. I think I'll have a ton of games to play once I am done dissertating if this keeps up ;-)

I am still working on the original content (haven't even gotten to expansions!), but the new chapter coming in a few days is looking interesting!

In my quest to play through as many Assassin's Creed games as possible, I got a Nintendo 3DS last year (well, I've been wanting one for a while and this was just a good excuse), and hit eBay for cheap (used) copies of the game. Still going on with SWTOR...
You know... When I started playing SWTOR, I didn't think the game would be this long! After playing Defiance for a bit (still playing, but not as much - maybe an hour or so per week), I thought that SWTOR would be light on story, and heavy on the end-game stuff (that requires people to subscribe for goodies). I am pretty happy to report that there is still a ton of story left in this game!I
Star Trek Online: Agents of Yesterday
Woah! The third major expansion to star trek online has been announced! Taking advantage of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, Star Trek Online is doing a TOS themed expansion. This sounds pretty exciting as players can start a character from the start and explore strange new worlds through that lens. One of the starter packs also comes packed with ships from the TOS era, as well as some
Assassin's Creed Identity
I don't know how this escaped my notice (maybe too busy with school and everything else) but there is a new (to me) mobile game that was released this year. I am actually wondering if there will be any more Nintendo 3DS games coming out that are assassin's creed games. Seems to me that this would be a good candidate (along with the Chronicles lines of games).
Woohoo! EGO upgrades based on XP :)
I like Defiance (the game), but as someone who usually plays solo, and has not joined a clan, leveling up can be a pain since leveling up (EGO level) was tied to pursuits that you did throughout the game (kill this many of this, level of that many of that, do all the missions in this arc, and so on). That works fine for those who want to pursue those game goals, but for me, as a solo point-and-shoot

After 3 years of playing Ingress on my phone (on and off), I've made it to level 9. Technically speaking I had already earned enough points to be promoted to level 9 several months ago, but since my achievements weren't keeping up with my XP I only now got a silver badge (in distance traversed I think) that allowed me to level up. I guess I'll need to go out and do some event days. I

I am starting to like to Call of Duty franchise :-) I have not played their World War II games, mostly because I don't like that era for this type of game, but who knows, once I am done with whatever I can play on my xbox 360 from this series, I might go back and revisit the first 3 CoD games (plus world at war), which take place in WWII.Anyway, In Call of Duty Black Ops II story is told partly
