I guess happy Pokemon day to you ;-) Hard to believe that this thing has been going strong since 1996 (I was in high school!). Part of me wishes I had bought the game on Game Boy back then, but I only watched the cartoon after school
Friday, Feb 23 2018 06:48 | adieu, miitomo, nintendo, Social Networking, Social Networks, Technology
Well...I guess that's the end of that! Miitomo has announced in via their app that Miitomo will go offline and never come back in May. For the past couple of years this quirky social network has kept us company. The idea behind it was that people would customize a Mii (which Nintendo has also slowly walked away from in their newest console, the Switch) and through those Miis you could interact
Awwww Nintendo! Your algorithms remembered my birthday! Even though no human was directly involved I am touched ;-). On another note, feels odd to be sharing a birthrate with a current Pope (fact courtesy of Google).
Mario's worst enemies
Tuesday, Nov 14 2017 01:30 | comics, Entertainment, Humor, nintendo, supermario, video games, VideoGames
A little humor from last week's Nerdrage. Mario's most recent enemy seems very...pedestrian :-)
Insanity over nintendo...
I came across last week's gamercat and it made me laugh, and ponder, a bit. Why are nintendo titles generally not available at launch, under-stocked, and over-priced? Even old games for the DS are not cheap (sometimes they are cheaper on ebay used, but not always). What gives?
How to get rid of Magikarp...
From last week's (or from two weeks ago?) Gamercat - how to get rid of your Magikarp... I do wonder if anyone is still playing that game (Magikarp jump). I found it dull and repetitive.
Original castlevania, in Unreal!
The things one finds on YouTube! Here is a play-through of a fan made remake of the original Castlevania in the Unreal Engine. Pretty interesting!
Metroid: Samus Returns
Tuesday, Jun 27 2017 17:19 | 3DS, E3, Entertainment, GameBoy, metroid, nintendo, trailer, video games, VideoGames
One of the games I forgot to look for a trailer for last week was Metroid: Samus Returns, which is a modern version of Metroid II which came out in 1992 (25 years ago!!!) for the original GameBoy. A good friend of mine had this game (and had beat it). As was common back then, we traded game cartridges and I tried to beat this game by starting at the beginning, but I found it frustrating.

New from Nintendo at E3 2017
Wednesday, Jun 14 2017 14:41 | 3DS, E3, Entertainment, nintendo, supermario, Switch, trailer, video games, VideoGames
Some really nice looking games announced by Nintendo at E3 yesterday. Some on the switch, some on the 3DS. I like the concept of the switch, but I can't really justify getting one considering that most of what I want to play is on the xbox one...Super Mario Odyssey trailer: Yoshi Trailer: Kirby Trailer:
Castlevania - the TV Series!
Saturday, May 27 2017 02:30 | castlevania, Entertainment, NES, netflix, nintendo, Television, trailer, video games, VideoGames
It seems like Netflix has a Belmont up its sleeve! Soon (I hope) an anime-style Castlevania series will be hitting Netflix. I think that this teaser trailer is well done (hope the series is well done too!). I wonder how they will tackle the lore...
Throwing money at Nintendo...
Tuesday, May 16 2017 01:30 | comics, Entertainment, gamercat, Humor, nintendo, video games, VideoGames
From last week's gamercat... As much as I want to throw money at Nintendo for the switch, I can't justify the cost and game availability (and cost thereof). As a child of the 90s though....Nintendo! (i.e. irrational behaviors at times)

Assassin's Creed Chronicles : Russia | Done!
Wednesday, Dec 7 2016 02:00 | 3DS, Assassins Creed, Entertainment, frustration, nintendo, PSP, video games, VideoGames, Windows, XBOX, youtube
добрый день товарищ!Man...that's DONE! Holy smokes! What the heck? Whaaaaaat?OK... I guess that I need to collect myself better before writing posts and game reviews. I just finished playing Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia (just now for me, a few days ago chronologically) and all I have to say is "Effff yoouuuuuu!" This game was one frustrating piece
4k pixel goodness!
I really don't get the whole craze around the NES classic. I never had an NES (but I've played games on it). I've played enough games on emulators, and granted the keyboard isn't as satisfying as a gamepad, if I felt like playing those games more often I'd go the Sweets route (orange cat here) - just get the original console and a CRT ;-)
Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles | Done
Well...it took a while...a long while, but this game is done ;-) I had started to play this game part time on my 3DS because I wanted to get through the entirety of the assassin's creed series before I got an xbox one. I had originally played this on my jailbroken iPhone 3GS many years ago (back in the iOS 4.x days) and I found the game extremely (extremely!) frustrating to control on
Nintendo Switch - pretty interesting
Saturday, Oct 22 2016 03:00 | Entertainment, Games, nintendo, preview, Video, video games, VideoGames, youtube
Nintendo's new gaming console seems like a mix of mobile and at-home console gaming. Seems pretty interesting, and it reminds me of the stuff that OQO tried to do with computing. Let's see how it goes :)
Off to the races...
Some esoteric video game humor from this past week...
New formats, new social norms?
Wednesday, Aug 10 2016 03:30 | ARG, comics, Humor, mobile, nintendo, pokemon, video games, VideoGames
A little social commentary on PokemonGo and the social awkwardness that can ensue (from last week's comics).
Old school copy protection?
What is the NES had today's 'copy protections'? :-)
When pop-culture and political culture collide
An interesting comic from this past week. Politics, meets gaming, meets technology...
Super Mario Maker - the movie
A little humor found recently on the interwebs...
Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice
Friday, Jun 17 2016 03:00 | 3DS, E3, Entertainment, nintendo, platformer, Sega, sonic, trailer, video games, VideoGames
It is a little odd, for me, to be seeing a sonic game on a nintendo platform - but times have changed :) I am looking forward to this!
Assassin's Creed: Discovery | Done!
Monday, May 30 2016 03:30 | 3DS, Apple, Assassins Creed, Entertainment, iPhone, Jailbreak, nintendo, video games, VideoGames
In my quest to play through as many Assassin's Creed games as possible, I got a Nintendo 3DS last year (well, I've been wanting one for a while and this was just a good excuse), and hit eBay for cheap (used) copies of the game. There have been 2 Assassin's Creed games for the DS, one taking place in Altair's time, and one in Ezio's time. I chose to play Ezio first, and go with the other

Back when I was a teenager I was reading about this collaboration in the gaming magazines of the time (the few that I could afford to buy from the UK when I was living in Greece) and I could only imagine! Engadget did find one of these layout around the video is below. Pretty cool to actually see one. The rumors behind this (and the lack of internet to verify this info) also made
Connecting on Miitomo
Monday, Apr 25 2016 12:00 | Games, miitomo, nintendo, Social Media, Social Networking, Social Networks, VideoGames
Seems like I haven't really found many friends and colleagues on Miitomo yet (maybe I am not the right demographic?) So, if you're reading this, try it out and connect ;-)
What a difference 20 years make :-) When I was in high school this would have seemed so awesome. Well, it still does, but the super nintendo and the genesis were the thing back then, and shoving it all into a gameboy form factor would have blown my mind!
Gamercat explains miitomo

The gameboy - hardware autopsy
Monday, Feb 29 2016 04:30 | computerScience, Computing, Entertainment, GameBoy, Hardware, nintendo, video games, VideoGames
This is a fun little video dissecting the Nintendo GameBoy. As a kid I wouldn't have cared, however as an undergraduate computer science major this would have been fascinating to know back in the late 90s :-) I remember programming in x86 assembly for one of my classes (and creating hardware for that same course that the code would run on!) :-)

Windows 95 lives! ... on a DS
Seems like some enterprising individuals has gotten Windows 95 to boot on a Nintendo 3DS. Pretty cool! Not sure how useful it is, but cool nevertheless.
Nintendo, and the Smartphone
Thursday, Jul 23 2015 19:53 | Classics, Concept, GameBoy, nintendo, Technology, Telephony, video games, VideoGames
A few days ago is seems like everywhere on the internet (or at least the places I hang out in), were publishing images of concepts of what a Nintendo phone would look like, which they seem have branded the SmartBoy, calling back to the original mobile hit, the GameBoy. The concept seems to be modular in design, with a gamepad add-on, and add-ons, like a higher megapixel camera, that connect
Super Mario and the Power Glove
Here's a pretty funny Mario silent film by the Nerdist :) Good for classic gamers ;-)Part IPart II
Super MBTA World
I love a good Mashup! This is a mashup I found posted by one of my Facebook friends depicting the metro system in Boston (what I use every day) as something from Super Mario World :-) Too bad it doesn't include the commuter rail system ;-)
Wii U - is it weird or just me?
Alright, so Part II of my E3 observations... the Wii U (Wii University?!?!?!) Now, it is me, or is this contraption just weird? Now, to be fair I did think that the original Wii was a bit weird having a controller schema that was so unlike previous joypad schemas - and in the end, having used a Wii at my brother's place, I didn't find it all that bad. The Wii U sort of reminds me a bit of the
Super Mario Crossover!
This is a good find: Play Super Mario Brothers with your favorite character from Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Simon Belmont or that guy from Contra :-) Now of course some things just don't work like Samus' blaster is kinda pathetic in the Mario World, and some things word great (like the Contra guy's gun). It's a nice little NES nostalgia mashup for those of us who grew up with it
NEStalgia - 8bit MMORPG!
As much as I love the Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell type games I love "classic" gaming. Some entrepreneurial person decided to make an 8bit style RPG with Online qualities... looks pretty cool!
