Adults in the Room: My Battle with Europe's Deep Establishment by Yanis VaroufakisMy rating: 5 of 5 stars I wasn't really sure what to expect reading this (having read some commentary from online friends who read it as events were unfolding), but I read it anyway. I think it's a valuable read for individuals who want a glimpse into how large systems function, and how there are (potentially)
Political, data science, and the manipulation of people

Today's "Ugh" (expression borrowed from George Station) ...From the Guardian:The data analytics firm that worked with Donald Trump’s election team and the winning Brexit campaign harvested millions of Facebook profiles of US voters, in the tech giant’s biggest ever data breach, and used them to build a powerful software program to predict and influence choices at the ballot box.Documents seen
Review: Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House
Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House by Michael WolffMy rating: 4 of 5 stars By the grace of covfefe! I am done! Well...this was an interesting book to read. Yes, it probably lacks the regular fixin's of a biography, but it was quite enlightening to get an inside look at the cast of characters in the current presidency. If you are familiar with Star Trek's mirror universe...the way
Donald and John...
Seems like people are having fun with Trump in a variety of ways. Here is a comic that puts Trump in a Calvinesque (Calvin & Hobbes, not the other Calvin ;-) ) role. This would be much more fun if it weren't so serious. Stable Genius indeed...
Don't be a Turkey
This came across my feeds sometime during Thanksgiving, so in a sense it's a bit late, but considering that Turkeys are traditional in quite a few norther European cultures for Christmas, I might be a little early ;-). Some humorous commentary on Ajit Pai the current FCC chairman (and subsequently the corporatecracy...or just corpocracy that's ruling us these days) and the upcoming fight for

The launch trailer for the next Wolfenstein game, a game that picks up where the previous game left off - with a Nazi occupied american continent, is now available. So many games to play once I am done with my dissertation ;-). Make American Nazi-Free Again!
How college loans got evil

Well, it's the first day of a new academic year. I guess this is the most sobering. This shit makes me angry (and I have no student loans!)
Of paradoxes, and politics
With the "Free Speech" rally happening in Boston today (and various other counterprotests), it seemed that this would be a good post for today - a report from other places already posted on facebook and other social media. Let's see who peaceful things are in Boston today. At least the police in Boston seem to have a better plan that those folks in NC, which I hope will keep folks safe.

MBA-speak, with John Oliver
Seems like a good week starts with John Olive and Last Week Tonight. I've queued up the video to the part that I found most funny (Dumbo Heights!!!), but the rest of the video is definitely worth a watch.
Babar married his cousin?!
This past weekend's last week tonight (on the topic of the upcoming french elections) was pretty awesome. Love the film noir ending ;-). I didn't remember that Babar married his cousin...
From last week tonight, with John Oliver recently:
Trump's new title
Decided to try out that executive order meme generator. Here's Trump's new title ;-)
Somehow I got on the White House's mailing list (must have been some petition I signed at some point), and now I get spam like this. I guess the White House is seriously pushing their new reality show "Presidential", but it faces steep prime-time competition from ABC, NBC, CBS, CW, and El Rey. I think Sharnado probably does better than this new reality show ;-)
Everything's better with Techno! ;-)

From last week tonight (from this past weekend). Everything is better with techno music - even bad lyrics :p
Politics and the nature of reality
Some current politics..and talk of reality. What is reality? How do we know it's real? Where's Plato and Aristotle when you need them?

Some video game humor mashed up with contemporary politics (by Dorkly)
The dutch are the best. Period!
Found on Facebook through Simon Ensor. Loved this video introducing the Netherlands to Trump ;-)
Found this past week on the web. Sociopolitical commentary on the current state of world politics (well, at least North American and European politics). Wondering where this world is going to.

I guess there is a need to be ever vigilant... (via boingboing)

This is found via BoingBoing, and the Encyclopedia Britannica.Something to think about in Trump's America...

Simpsons 3 a.m. call
ROFL! Some political humor from the Simpsons for this electoral period:
When pop-culture and political culture collide
An interesting comic from this past week. Politics, meets gaming, meets technology...
Brexit a reality?
It amazes me that voters regret their vote on this. I could say something snarky about an informed voter populace, but I won't. All I can do is shake my head at them...Instead, I will share a meme that made me laugh...As a side note, I do wonder if there will be any "takebacksies" with this thing, since the vote to exit the EU isn't something that goes into effect right away.

This has been making the rounds on social media this week: a fictitious article mocking presidential candidate Donald Trump by writing an academic article in Trumpspeak. We've got the best data. Premium stuff! Pretty funny ;-)
Erdowie, Erdowo, Erdogan
Apparently the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has never heard of the Streissand Effect . From the New York Times:If President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey had hoped that summoning the German ambassador would get a video poking fun at him by a German satire program removed from the Internet, he was wrong. Instead, the move had any number of consequences, including provoking
Got this in the mail the other day. I think more of us should be posting this on our pages ;-)

Who said politicians can't be funny?
It's super Tuesday! Go Vote!
I can't believe it's here! Super Tuesday! For those of you abroad, this is when a lot of states hold their primary elections (instead of having an election here and an election there in scattered form). This is usually when front-runner nominees show up.I can't believe that Trump is projected to win Massachusetts (I mean...seriously people!) Good thing I am independent and I can vote in

Last week on "last week tonight with John Oliver" the main investigative segment of the satirical news show was on voter ID laws. For those of you abroad, in the US you don't have to prove you are who you say you are in order to go vote. You can just go, give the person your street address, and your name, and they'll cross you off as having voted. I've always found this a little odd, that in
Liberty and Security
A little something found on facebook. A little social commentary after the terrorist attacks on Paris in November 2015:
Language politics and the internet
There are some people that I have been following on Twitter that I have now started following on Google+ because they are quite interesting and quite a few times they give you some food for thought. Two of these people are Panagiotis and Nikos (both post in English and Greek). The origin of this post comes from a question that Panagiotis (@vrypan) had about the utility
Generic GOP candidate to beat Obama
So specific GOP candidates get whooped by Obama, but a generic one doesn't ?!?!?! Well, meet your generic candidate, America!
Official Language of the U.S. finally named!

Hollowmen - ABC funding
I can't wait for the Hollowmen to come back!Yes, I know it's an Australian show, but politics is absurd no matter what the country ;-)
