One more on the vintage tech!

Pocket Surfer 2OK, I sort of felt like I should have an honorable mention category for all the things I was going to post, and that I had drafts started back in my drafts blogs in 2019, but ultimately I ended up deleting, due mostly to a change of interests.  Still, here's a list of devices that didn't make the cut in my technology retrospective:1996-2013 Windows Handheld PCs (Wikipedia, YouTube)2000

Vintage Tech - OQO PC

OQO Model e2Alright!Here is the LAST of my 2019 tech backlog!  At least from the things I chose to save and write about.Today's blog post is dedicated to the OQO PC.  This is one of those devices that seemed to signal the future of computing to me back in those days.  The OQO Model 1 was released in 2004, and the final model (the e2) was released in 2007.  There was a subsequent

Back on the Mac!

Well, to be fair, I was never gone, but my "daily driver" for the past 3 years (during the early days of COVID) has been an aging Dell Optiplex 9010, which was a hand-me-down. When my work-issued Surface Pro 3 died an untimely death in 2017 (and wasn't replaced), I refurbished the Optiplex which I had saved in our equipment closet for just such an emergency occasion. The original use case was

Star Trek Timelines | Reached Endgame

Dusting off this old post from April 2020! I had started to write this up back then, but then it got stuck in my drafts.  Anywho...here's another game that I've reached the end-game! huzzah! (sarcasm). So, what is Star Trek Timelines?  Star Trek Timelines is a mobile free-to-play game that takes place in the Star Trek Universe. I first started playing this on my old iPad 2 (back when that

Vintage Tech - HTC Blue Angel, Universal, HD Mini, and Moto Mpx

Windows Mobile. So much promise...So much frustration ;-) After a hiatus from Windows Mobile (after mu iPaq), I had decided to try windows mobile again.  At the time HTC seemed to be the golden child of the industry when it came to windows phones.  They made reference designs that other companies could use or rebrand.  One such design, which caught my eye, was the HTC Blue Angel

Vintage Tech - iPaq

Back when I started my graduate studies, I decided to leave the Apple Newton behind (I know, sacrilege, eh?) and get a more "modern" PDA.  While my Newton did support unicode (probably the first platform to do so natively, I think), the unicode was not implemented, so typing in Greek was a pain. I had to either use Greeklish, or use the Symbol font to display contacts (which made my non-Greek

Got some more accolades (STO)

It's been a while since I played Star Trek Online with the intent to be on the accolade hunt.  I actually I thought I had most of them, but then I came across a list created by one of the game's other players and saw that I was missing a considerable amount.  After clearing out the retired accolades (ones that you can't get any longer), and the ones that you can in theory get, but you

Overload is coming!

It took a while, but this kickstarter is almost here (to be released at the end of May).  I haven't been playing the betas (even though my kickstarter pledge allows me to) to get totally immersed when it's released. It's been a while since I played a game of this sort (since Descent, actually!)

Microsoft: where mobile operating systems go do die

I am not sure if I was revising something on Feedly that I had not read yet, or if this crossed one of my feeds last week, but the story was about Windows Mobile 10 being taken off life support (it wasn't this story, but it gives you an idea). I've come to the conclusion, over the past decade, that Microsoft (just like Sony) just isn't good at Mobile.  They've given it a valiant try with Windows

Star Trek Online: Season 13 - Escalation

Escalation hit the interwebs last week, and having played a bit this weekend it's not bad!  The Smoke & Mirrors mission reminded me a little of Star Wars (the aesthetic), and a little bit of Captain Planet (the "don't mess up your planet by polluting, Kids!) I played a bit in the competitive warzone queues and the space one is definitely my favorite or the two. The ground missions (invisible
