The new twist on this old trope is that the Earthers built a 500-square-mile colony on the Moon that a bunch of settlers from Earth colonized. Rather than eyeing the moon as a potential Earth replacement, the community of Moonhaven was sent with a powerful artificial intelligence system designed to find solutions for Earth’s problems. Soooo...  they are a far away thinktank that is going to solve all of Earth's  problems by having an AI engineer a new society free from past attachments (and then import that society back to Earth). As the pilot begins, a younger generation of Moon settlers is on the verge of returning to Earth with what they’ve learned, a last-gasp humanitarian mission.
