TV Binge (Part III)
Thursday, Oct 7 2021, 14:42 adieu, capcom, castlevania, DC, Drama, Entertainment, FOX, netflix, police, Sci-Fi, supernatural, TelevisionWith the late start of current seasons due to COVID, it's more past show binging (and also finishing off stuff I had started). I started to write this back in March, but I am just getting to jotting down some thoughts.
Supernatural
To be honest, I wasn't really sure how this whole series was going to end. A series that basically billed itself as going out and hunting the monster of the week almost has no end; unless you get rid of all of the monsters (unlikely) or the main cast dies. It dawns on me that I should have written this blurb as I completed the finale so things would be fresh in my mind. Oh well! Sooooo...from memory..., Chuck (aka God) sees the light (or something) and leaves earth alone, so that story arc was tied up. I don't recall exactly how Chuck decided to leave, but it seems a little anticlimactic in retrospect (if I can't remember it). I did find it interesting that Chuck was the author of the Supernatural book series. So what happens to Sam and Dean? Well, it seems like they kept on trucking, slaying demons, until one hunt became deadly for Dean. Dean dies, goes to heaven, and is greeted by Bobby. Seems fair, Dean always said that he'd die standing like an old-world warrior. Sam decides to hang up his cape, settle down, marry, have a kid, and we see his life in stages going forward, until he dies and joins the family in heaven. It seems like Sam's journey, after Dean dies, tweaks back to his original plan before his girlfriend was possed by the demon that had possed his mother, so the entire supernatural adventure was like a small pause in what seemed like his destined normal life. With 15 seasons of this show, a rewatch is probably due in a few years :-)
Long way up
Also something I should have written about as I saw it LOL. Well, I was excited to see that the Ewan & Charlie team got back together to do another one of these. It's fun to see these types of travel shows where people go off the beaten path. This time around everything was done in a more eco-friendly way using electric motorcycles and electric SUV. All of this was experimental, so I suspect that part of their crew had representatives from BWM and Rivian with them. This was an enjoyable series, and in the final leg of the trip I liked their McGyvering spirit that converted an old school bus (gasoline-powered) to get them through the last leg of the trip in Mexico. I think it's a bit of a cheat to say that the entire journey was on electric vehicles, but considering that they were driving prototypes in places where they wouldn't normally field test these things, I'd say that it was a resounding success. I hope that there is another series, but I don't know what else there is to explore on electric motorbikes.
Criminal Minds
I used to watch this series when it originally aired, but I lost interest around season 6. Since there was a pandemic around, I decided to give it another go and binged the remaining 7 seasons. Overall it wasn't bad, but I did see why I stopped watching: storylines eventually kept getting recycled. You did get to see some character development, which was nice, but the onslaught of serial killers week by week made it so that it was less of a show to watch with your full attention, and more like something to have on while doing something else. We often figured out who the bad guy was before the final reveal ;-)
Doom Patrol (Season 2)
I remember watching this and liking it, but I can't for the life of me remember any specific overall story arc. We did get to see more into the personal histories of characters, and for some reason they were all mini-sized (like the size of "the littles" - if you remember that kids show). If you stick with it, the show does pay off (and you get to enjoy some nifty visuals and camera work). The finale seemed a little rushed, but I think that's because COVID had caught up with production and they needed to wrap things up. That said - enjoyable. I think I need to actually watch both season 1 and 2 again.
Castlevania (Season 3+4)
Another binge for season 3 (March), and then in August season 4. Now that this series is over I feel like I need to rewatch this series from the beginning to get the entire story. The season 3 storytelling seemed a little off, compared to the past two seasons, which made it a little hard to follow - especially watching this thing in bed and dozing off at times. Season 4 was more coherent in terms of storytelling, but I think I had gaps in my memory from season 3. At the end of the day, the Castlevania story wraps up with Dracula essentially not being the bad guy, rather he seems to be someone that is misunderstood. There are bad guys out there, but I don't have a full picture how everything is connected. I feel like serialized storytelling that is 10-episodes per year requires a bit of a recap with a "previously on..." segment - unless they expect the audience to rewatch past seasons :-)
NeXt
Damn you Fox! You keep canceling the series I like! As you might imagine, this series was canceled by Fox after 13 episodes. The concept behind this series is that there is an AI that's gaining sentience (in that it is looking out for its own survival) and the only person that can save the world is the person who created it, but is no longer at the company he created. He's been ousted by the board, and is looking for ways to bring the AI down. The story isn't all that original, we saw something similar in Person of Interest (although that AI wasn't as malicious), and in the Terminator franchise. The ending at least seemed satisfactory, and enough to warrant a rewatch periodically. I'll add this to my list of cancelled Fox shows, like Space: Above and Beyond and Firefly...
