Millenium | Done

Back in the last 90s there was a show on Fox, a spin-off of the X-Files, made by the same folks as the X-Files. If it wasn't a spin-off, it just took place in the same universe as the X-Files and the Lone Gunmen.

[SPOILERS]

I had started watching the series when it was originally on the air (you know, before DVR, streaming, and all that) back in 1996 but I wasn't really sure how much of the show I had watched back then.  Now that I've done a re-watch I can say with certainty that I had seen Seasons 1 and 2, and skipped Season 3 (probably because I was in college an working 2 jobs while going to school).

Anyway,  this show follows Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) as a retired FBI agent who has some sort of "gift" (if you can call it that) whereby he can see into the twisted minds of the killers he is after.  Well, that life was a little too much for Frank, given his family situation (new kid), so he retires to Washington state (Portland?) and decides to take up consulting.  The millennium group is sort of a shady organization that is counting down to the new millienium (remember that craze?) where supposedly something phenomenal would happen. The millennium group traces its history back to the last millennium, and it had vibes of the secret group of men in the X-Files that worked with alien invaders.

Season 1 I found a bit slow, Season 2 I liked, but from some of the reviews I've seen on the web it seems that people felt that it went off the rails, but I actually liked it a lot.  The daemons sitting at a coffee shop and talking about their day was probably my favorite episode (probably because it was very X-Files-like).  Season 3 was annoying, and it felt like it undid a lot of Season 2.  Frank re-joins the FBI after the millennium group kills his wife with some sort of biotoxin, the millennium group and that story arc isn't really prominent, and the overall story just seemed to unravel.  In the end the show went out with a fizzle.  This is too bad because it really did have a good premise, it was just really poorly executed. I also dislike that they didn't do much with the character of Catherine Black (Frank's wife) who was at best a piece of the set in season 1, and when she seemed to get more involved with the story she is killed off at the end of the second season.  Why?

Do you remember watching this show?  What do you think about it?  I'd say it deserves a reboot, but we are a few hundred years away from the next millennium ;-)
