On the one hand the formula is well known for this kind of film. There is someone from the future that sends back someone (or some machine) to the past so that they can save the future.  Spoiler alert, Judgement Day still happens in some way, shape, or form, and everything that has happened before happens again.  That said, this series explains that every time you send someone to the past to change things, it creates a splinter timeline, so the original timeline exists somewhere, but there's a chance that the alternate timeline will be better. Thus, opening the door for some Terminator Multiverse storytelling in the future.

Without spoiling too much, the innovation in this series (beyond it being animated) is that it takes place in Japan, and the present day protagonist seems to know of Judgement Day (through a series of night terrors he has), so he's building an AI to fight fire with fire (I guess). There are some revelations that happen in the final episodes which are some interesting plot twists and adaptations to the original formula.  I hope this gets a second and third season.  Would love to see where it goes.
