Mission Impossible: * Reckonings | Short Thought
%AM, %b %America/Chicago %2026, %R Action, Entertainment, mission impossible, Movies, review, travelAlright, one final movie review before the fall semester starts! The funny thing is that this series of movies was what I watched first on the way to Greece this summer 😂. Saved the best for last? Maybe. Or maybe they were just popcorn flicks and I left that for last. Either way, here we are.
In Fallout, Ethan Hunt chooses to save his team, allowing three plutonium cores to be stolen by the Apostles, a terrorist remnant of the Syndicate. Forced to partner with ruthless CIA assassin August Walker, Ethan infiltrates a Parisian criminal network by posing as extremist John Lark. The mission unravels (predictably) when Walker is exposed as the true John Lark. Walker frames Ethan, murders the IMF Director, and flees with captured Syndicate leader Solomon Lane to Kashmir. There, they plot to detonate the nuclear weapons, which would contaminate the water supply of one-third of the world's population. In a race against time, Ethan's team dismantles the warheads while Ethan pursues Walker in an aerial helicopter chase.
In Dead Reckoning Part One (spoiler alert: there is no part two 😂), Ethan Hunt targets the Entity, a rogue, sentient AI capable of controlling global "truth." To destroy it, Ethan must locate a two-part cruciform key. This quest pits him against Gabriel, a dangerous ghost from his past, and a thieving new ally, Grace. Tracking the keys from Abu Dhabi to Venice, Ethan faces devastating personal loss when Ilsa Faust is killed. During a spectacular runaway train climax in the Austrian Alps, Ethan defeats Gabriel, recovers the complete key, and escapes, now poised to find the sunken Russian submarine housing the Entity's core.
Finally (and by this time I had paused and resumed the movie a few times between flights, but I got it in before we landed! Oh yeah, this I guess is "part two"), Ethan Hunt races to stop the Entity. To destroy it, Ethan must retrieve its original source code from the sunken Russian submarine Sevastopol using the cruciform key. This task pits him against global governments and his nemesis, Gabriel. After navigating the flooded submarine, Ethan recovers the code container but loses Luther's critical "poison pill" data trap to Gabriel. Following a biplane dogfight (so awe inspiring it made the poster), Ethan kills Gabriel and mid-air inserts the data pill. Grace successfully traps the Entity, neutralizing its global nuclear threat and concluding Ethan's final (?) mission.
It's not an MI film unless Ethan Hunt runs...runs a lot...even more than Forrest Gump. It's also not an MI film without some kind of amazing chace scene with planes, trains, motorcycles, and automobiles. Yes, this is a popcorn flick type of series. We may have seen the last of Ethan Hunt (?), but I hope the unvierse resumes in the future.
Fallout gets 3/5
Dead Reconing gets 4/5
Final Reconing gets 4/5
