It's been quite a long time, but is have finally completed my reviewing of all Star Trek (official) TV series and movies. Well, OK, I have not yet seen the animated series, so I guess I can't claim "all" official ones yet. The latest one to get the check mark is the Next Generation and its associated movies. TNG was my first trek, wathvung it in Greecewhen is as a kid with my grandfather. Personally I would have preferred cartoons back then, but I developed a taste for trek. When I was a teen I saw all of the series on reruns, but that was really it - until now.

The first season was a bit shaky. The uniforms we just a bit off, and the plots really resembled some original trek plots, like encounter at farpoint. They weren't bad, just not my preferred cup of tea. Watching these again reminded me if two characters that I was lukewarm about back then: Wesley and Q. Q back then was interesting, but I really didn't dig the superhuman being meddling in human affairs. This time around I saw Q as much more of a plot device than anything else. In other series I think Q is developed more and is made more "human".

Wesley was annoying as hell when I was a teen. New as too much of a "sir,yes sir" kid. Watching it again I thought that Wesley was just another kid looking for a father figure and being annoying at it, but annoying in an awkward way. I bad completely forgotten that at the end if the series he quit starfleet to go find his star destiny (or whatever). It was thus a bit weird to see his in a starfleet dress uniform at The Riker/Troy wedding reception. Small plot hole there, guys :)

Speaking of the movies, I think the same holds true for TNG movies as was true for TOS movies: they were two hour long TV scripts that were made into movie form. They were good, but they are not necessarily what one goes to the movie theater for. Although, I do remember going to the theater for a couple of them. That said the movies weren't bad. I preferred Generations, First Contact and Nemesis; Insurrection really didn't do much for me. At the end if nemesis I was a bit peeved that they killed off data. Sure, Spiner is getting old, a fact of life, but the character doesn't need to be included in future movie; (after all, in a related example, how many plot devices can you use to bring Worf back from DS9? It seems from the comic books that preceded the 2009 Trek Reboot that data somehow was resurrected using B4's android body. Well, at least there's that ;-)

All things considered, I liked TNG (despite the first season). I doubt there will be another movie of this. I wonder who will play Picard in the reboot in 30 years ;-)
