Adieu Delicious!

I guess this shows you how much attention I paid to Del.icio.us! I learned the other day that Delicious went under last summer, purchased - for one last time, by Pinboard (another web 2.0 company) to maintain the site for historical reasons (good on them!).  Delicious was quite an innovative site at the time.  Launched in 2003 to make web bookmarks social and to enable people to share interesting

Publons Year end Review.

The other day Publons, a service in which people can get credit for performing peer reviews for academic journal articles, sent me a link to my year-end-review.  Just like other year-end-reviews, I don't really treat it as a report card, but rather  as a "huh!, ain't that interesting!".  I think the old saying of you get out of something what you put into it is quite true with these

Adieu Pi! We hardly knew ye...

This past semester one of my colleagues, and fellow co-instructor of the Instructional Design capstone project, suggested we use a new service called Pi to bring our sections together. This sounded like a great idea given that the capstone course tends to be pretty hermetic for most students, since they work on individual projects.  The separate sections also have a low number of students

Adieu! Yahoo! Pipes!

Well, another useful piece of the internet is pulling the curtains as its show is complete.  Yahoo Pipes was an interesting "Web 2.0" service that came out when we were all hot and heavy on RSS-goodness, and had open ways to get content from one site, remix it with another, and create our own new thing. At the time of its announcement I was listening to a Greek Podcast by vrypan, and other

More classic goodness, in your web browser

Well.  As if running MacOS 6 in vMac on your smartwatch wasn't enough, if you are craving some classic operating systems check out PCE.js which allows you to run MacOS 6 in a web browser, as well as Windows and DOS.  I wonder what my younger self would think of this if I had seen this 20 years ago... Now it's time to start emulating Amigas, IIgs, and OS/2. If you feel nostalgic for Windows

Adieu TvTag...

Well...I guess it's time to bid adieu to TvTag :-/.  This is a social television watching service that took over the old GetGlue once GetGlue was bought by i.TV.  The concept behind GetGlue, and later on TvTag was that you could check into shows that you were watching, you would thus have an opportunity to see what your friends were watching, get some recommendations for television

Adieu, SpringPad

Well, another nice online, and free, service is biting the dust. In about 20 days the online notepad, SpringPad, is closing its doors. I was introduced to the services three years ago through a work colleague and I have to say that I've used SpringPad exclusively for all work related note taking. While I do use Evernote for all of my personal notes (teaching, class work, homework, professional reminders,

Still haven't found a good Reader replacement

Reeder for iPad Damn you Google! :) Since Google announced that they will be shutting down Google Reader I've been looking around for a Google Reader replacement, and I've been coming up almost flat.  When Google got rid of the "share item" sharing option, which gave you your own RSS page, it didn't really have much of an impact on me.  Sure, I wouldn't be able to see what my contacts

Adieu, Cinch

Well, that's a bummer!Cinch was a service that allowed you to record audio on your phone and seamlessly post it to the web. This for me was an easy way of getting a podcast together (and it also reminded me of another defunct service, utterly). I never really got started with that podcast (maybe I will get it going with audioboo now) but I liked to show off cinch for language learning classrooms.oh

Adieu, Gist

Well... Another bites the dust! I just got an email today from Gist, a service that brought together all of your contact's information (including social networks).  Gist and Rapportive were competitors, and I ended up using Rapportive more than Gist.  They were acquired by RIM, and the rest is history.  So, adieu Gist! Here's the email: We started Gist in 2008 to make connecting
