TV Recap - 2021 Miscellaneous (Part II)
Saturday, Dec 18 2021, 08:37 ABC, AMC, CBS, Comedy, Entertainment, netflix, review, Sci-Fi, Television, youtubeSome more TV watching... or rather thoughts on TV shows that I caught up on over the past year 📺
Brooklyn 99
Brooklyn 99 wrapped up this year. It was one of our favorite comedies, but given everything that's been happening in the US the producer's decision to wrap it up made sense. This final season addresses stuff that happened in the real world, which sees Rosa quit and become a PI, Hitchcock retire - presumably due to COVID - but he's still around being brought from place to place by Scully on an iPad, Amy works on implementing changes to address bad cop behavior - which puts her in the crosshairs of the police union leadership. Jake grapples with what it means to be him without being a cop (something he wanted to do since he was a kid), and ultimately decides to quit his job to be a full-time dad. Terry becomes the new Captain of the precinct, and the series ends with all of them deciding to continue their Halloween Heists despite their life changes. Oh yeah, and we find out that you don't need to be born a Boyle, you can become a Boyle 😮
Origin
While looking for undiscovered Sci-Fi over the summer, I came across this series that premiered as a YouTube Original - back when YouTube did these things.
Halt & Catch Fire
This had been on my Netflix (or was it amazon?) watch list for a while. Since the series wrapped up after 4 seasons, the pandemic seemed like a good time to binge it.
The story takes place between the early 1980s and late 1990s and follows a group of friends, who become frienemies, and then back to some kind of friendship again, and it follows the story of the (micro)computer - aka PC desktop (this HP, Dell, Apple), the birth of online services (e.g., AOL, and Compuserve), including online gaming, and a directory service that is basically Yahoo. Throughout the series, the Steve Jobs Type character seems to always be either one step ahead of trends or one step behind, and in the end the Google-style search engine kills off the Yahoo-style directory service they were running.
This was a fun series, albeit a bit frustrating to watch at times.
Kim's Convenience
I was really bummed when this series came to an end 😤. This one is available on Netflix (and originally aired on CBC), and it follows the Kim family. The parents are immigrants to Canada, and the kids seem to be first-gen Korean-Canadians. The Kims run a convenience store (hence the name), and they get into all sorts of hijinks you might expect them to get into.
Even though the family portrayed was Korean, I could see a lot of Greek (or other immigrant) families being in those types of situations or thinking and doing similar things. The parents are trying to figure out how to best fit into their new environments, while the kids are also straddling two worlds, one they were born into and one where they might not have had first-hand knowledge of.
The funny thing is that we've seen Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Jean Yoon in other Canadian series over the years, but when we see them we always say "It's Appa!" or "it's Umma!" I guess the characters have stuck with us! 😁
