I would say that this is a "must-read" book. It reminded me a lot of the original aspirations and "promise" of connected technologies and "smart" devices, which was to serve people for the purpose of improving our lives.  Instead, what is described as "data exhaust," all of our aggregated activity on the web through click-streams and server logs, our intentional activities (like this blog, and the corresponding review on Goodreads), and other types of surveillance that have emerged (or become worse) over the last 20 years, have been harvested and used in ways that doesn't help us (the users), but helps line the pockets of platform holders.
