Year-in-Review: Goodreads

Well, I far exceeded my anticipated books to-read in 2021, but many of them were comic books :-) I did read a few things for class, and a few other fiction and non-fiction alike for pleasure, but many comics were read.  I had wanted to finish the relaunch Star Trek Voyager series but that didn't happen.  Definitely in 2022!

Review: Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation

Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation by Blake J. Harris My rating: 5 of 5 stars Quite an interesting story. It picks up right after the Master System and ends with the Sega Saturn.  I would have liked to have known a bit more (Dreamcast era, and Sega getting out of the console business), but maybe that's for another book :-)

Review: 25 Years of Ed Tech

25 Years of Ed Tech by Martin Weller My rating: 5 of 5 stars Great overview of the past 25 years of Edtech.  I wish some more specifics were covered (specific platforms, especially defunct ones like Google Wave and other very specific Web 2.0 ones that are no longer around), but this was a good survey of the field. I really enjoyed listening to this in podcast

Review: Bullshit Jobs: A Theory

Bullshit Jobs: A Theory by David Graeber My rating: 5 of 5 stars Awesome thesis, pretty spot on IMO. This was a worthwhile read. Looking back at this, I am wondering what hiring managers, staffing managers, and the modern workplace would look like (keeping in mind work-from-home and other things that emerged from this pandemic), if we kept the content of this book

Review: Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man

Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man by Mary L. Trump My rating: 4 of 5 stars Interesting to see intergenerational trauma turned into intergenerational psychopathy. I read this back in early spring after Trump exited office. So much facepalm with this presidency, and it could have all been avoided if people in the know about how dysfunctional

Review: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood by Oliver BowdenMy rating: 4 of 5 stars It's been such a long time since I played brotherhood that most of the story was "new" to me - which was actually pretty fun. I still got flashbacks to some of the game mechanics in the game itself while listening to this novel. I still think it's a missed opportunity to explore more of the modern day assassins (what

Review: Assassin's Creed: Renaissance

Assassin's Creed: Renaissance by Oliver BowdenMy rating: 3 of 5 stars Not a bad adaptation of Assassin's Creed 2. It's been over 10 years since I played the game, so this was a fair memory jogging device of things that occurred in Ezio's timeline in that second game. The writing wasn't bad, the main characters we good, and (if you're like me) you were reminded of some of the happenings

Review: Adults in the Room: My Battle with Europe's Deep Establishment

Adults in the Room: My Battle with Europe's Deep Establishment by Yanis VaroufakisMy rating: 5 of 5 stars I wasn't really sure what to expect reading this (having read some commentary from online friends who read it as events were unfolding), but I read it anyway. I think it's a valuable read for individuals who want a glimpse into how large systems function, and how there are (potentially)

Review: Auberon: An Expanse Novella

Auberon: An Expanse Novella by James S.A. CoreyMy rating: 5 of 5 stars An interesting, short, novella about the newly minted governor of Auberon - Auberon being the breadbasket for the Laconian empire (sort of a replacement for Ganymede). I'd love to learn more about the characters in this book, both the "mafia" and the government side. I liked the saying near the end which was an offshoot

Review: Tiamat's Wrath

Tiamat's Wrath by James S.A. CoreyMy rating: 5 of 5 stars Another fast-paced installment of the series (hard to believe that there is only one more left!!!). This one jumps a bit into the future with a slightly older crew, with different responsibilities. Some of our crew die, and some make miraculous comebacks! The bringing together of former crew members reminded me a bit of Star Trek
