Microsoft's cancelled AndromedaOS

The other day Windows Central published a look at Microsoft's canceled mobile operating system, codenamed Andromeda. This was going to be the next iteration of Windows Mobile, which bit the dust.  It's too bad, because I think that Microsoft had something there with the whole Metro UI, and they could have bankrolled the OS until it caught on, but the janky transition from WM7 to WM8 to WM10

Adieu Blackberry!

Well, that's an end of an era!  Old Blackberry devices no longer function as of yesterday!  I remember the Blackberry craze well.  At the time (circa 2004-2005) the Blackberry craze was pretty strong on my campus with everyone of any "importance" on campus having one (subsidized by the campus of course). Lots of IT folks had one, and so did many managers.  Blackberry messenger

Nostalgia sells...and it's expensive!

As I was browsing my RSS feeds the other day I saw that Motorola has a new RAZR phone coming out.  I still have my old RAZR 3G in a drawer somewhere as a backup phone in case my smartphones die 😁 (wonder if the battery is still any good).  The original RAZR phone was an insane $500 (if memory serves me right) for a "dumb" phone that was network-locked.  This is at a time when I could

MIcrosoft Surface Duo

It seems like the idea behind the folding screen device isn't dead yet. Last week microsoft announced a few new devices, including a folding android-based device (which they claim is not a phone, but it is most clearly a phone).  It reminds me a lot of the knowledge navigator concept that Apple put together all those years ago (you know, when Apple was sort of out there and tried new things).

A little farther now from .Mac...

At first there was iTools.  Then there was dotMac (.Mac), then there was MobileMe, and now there is iCloud. I think this particular service was what I first used as paid web-hosting, and as a Mac user both at work and as school (before always-connected phones), I used mail, calendar, contact and bookmark sync for everything.  As I slowly moved from an iPhone/iPad ecosystem to Android, so

The New T-Mobile Sidekick!

Continuing with the April Fool's parade, I actually had a good laugh at this one.  The Sidekick was T-Mobile's brand for the Danger Hiptop (nice device, needs a comeback!), which is what this ad/fake product is referencing.  That said, any fans of Get Smart will also appreciate the shoe-phone :-)

Back to a modern smartphone

As much as I liked the Nokia N8, I needed to get back to using a more modern smartphone for my day to day work.  I decided that waiting some more time for motorola (or Google) to release new flagship products would take a long time, and the few merits of the N8 wouldn't warrant waiting that long for the next android device.Symbian Belle Refresh OSSo,  what did I like about the N8 and Symbian

A little less retro...with the N8

It's been an interesting experiment using the Motorola Razr as my daily driver, however with the lack of being able to just search the internet the phone didn't really do it for me (despite the satisfying "clack" you hear when you flip it closed).  I was looking on the web and I decided to buy a refurbished Nokia N8 to keep me going a bit until I find an android phone which I like. The N8 was

Replacing the Nexus 4 screen - DYI

For a brief moment I thought that I might go a little DIY with fixing my nexus 4 screen.  I did find the parts on Amazon for around $30 (relatively cheap I think), however after viewing this instructional video I thought twice about it.  It takes a professional 2 hours to do this, it will most likely take me more (if I don't ragequit ;-) ). The video lost me at using a hear gun to remove

Retro Mobile!

It's been a couple of weeks now since my Nexus 4 sort of died.  It took a tumble from my bike and hit the pavement in such a way that the touch screen no longer responds to input.  The rest of the phone seems to work fine, but without an ability to do input it's not all that useful.  So, I pulled out the old Motorola v3xx phone (aka razr 3G) from the drawer, powered it up, and put
