Introducing Pen Point (1991)

In my older mobile device retrospective series, I guess I totally forgot about PenPoint!  Since I was just reminded about its existence again, I thought I'd look it up and see what it looked like (last time I thought about this OS, MacOS 9 was still a thing...).   PenPoint was a product of GO Corporation and it was one of the earliest operating systems written specifically for personal

One more on the vintage tech!

Pocket Surfer 2OK, I sort of felt like I should have an honorable mention category for all the things I was going to post, and that I had drafts started back in my drafts blogs in 2019, but ultimately I ended up deleting, due mostly to a change of interests.  Still, here's a list of devices that didn't make the cut in my technology retrospective:1996-2013 Windows Handheld PCs (Wikipedia, YouTube)2000

Gemini PDA - A blast from the past

Well... Back in 2019 I had started to write this post, when the Gemini PDA was relatively new, and ... well it got forgotten in my drafts folder 😂.  The images of the device pictured are that of the Gemini PDA, which is a connected PDA that aims to replicate the look and feel of those older Psion Series 5 PDAs from the late 90s. The device runs Android, and it has a slot for a SIM so

Microsoft's cancelled AndromedaOS

The other day Windows Central published a look at Microsoft's canceled mobile operating system, codenamed Andromeda. This was going to be the next iteration of Windows Mobile, which bit the dust.  It's too bad, because I think that Microsoft had something there with the whole Metro UI, and they could have bankrolled the OS until it caught on, but the janky transition from WM7 to WM8 to WM10

Vintage Tech - HTC Blue Angel, Universal, HD Mini, and Moto Mpx

Windows Mobile. So much promise...So much frustration ;-) After a hiatus from Windows Mobile (after mu iPaq), I had decided to try windows mobile again.  At the time HTC seemed to be the golden child of the industry when it came to windows phones.  They made reference designs that other companies could use or rebrand.  One such design, which caught my eye, was the HTC Blue Angel

Vintage Tech - iPaq

Back when I started my graduate studies, I decided to leave the Apple Newton behind (I know, sacrilege, eh?) and get a more "modern" PDA.  While my Newton did support unicode (probably the first platform to do so natively, I think), the unicode was not implemented, so typing in Greek was a pain. I had to either use Greeklish, or use the Symbol font to display contacts (which made my non-Greek

MIcrosoft Surface Duo

It seems like the idea behind the folding screen device isn't dead yet. Last week microsoft announced a few new devices, including a folding android-based device (which they claim is not a phone, but it is most clearly a phone).  It reminds me a lot of the knowledge navigator concept that Apple put together all those years ago (you know, when Apple was sort of out there and tried new

Love notes to Newton

Now I wish I had known about this crowdfunding campaign a while back (I don't often visit indiegogo, but I do keep an eye out on kickstarter from time to time).  This is a documentary, that luckily was partially funded about one of the most awesome mobile platforms in computing history: the Apple Newton.    I can't wait for this to come out :-) Love Notes to Newton

Vintage tech - Psion PDAs

Back for another installment of Vintage Technology! This time I thought I'd write a little bit about the Psion series of Personal Digital Assistants.  Psion didn't really hit my radar until around 2001, but by that time I think that the company had already started switching directions. Original Psion 3 Back in 1995(ish) I am pretty sure that I remember seeing the Psion series 3, series

From the archive: the Apple iWalk

I love being reminded of rumors from yesteryear :-)  Back in the early 2000s there was a site called SpyMac which, as the name suggest, was a website that posted rumors about upcoming Apple products. I think that it also encouraged people to submit spyshots of new products, and hence potentially break their NDA.  The site no longer exists, but we still have some interesting fakes
