Pondering what to learn next πŸ€”

A look back to 2022 - Part V

This is Part V of V of a look back to 2022. The first part discussed peer review requests in 2022, and the second part discussed professional development more broadly.  The third part branched off a bit from the second part, discussing professional development a bit more from an academic development frame.  The fourth part reflected a bit on research and publishing. Concluding

Faculty CPD: The View from the Bleachers.

This particular post has been in my drafts folder for a while now.  The post started off as some ponderings, based on tweets from fellow instructional designers (over the summer), that lamented the fact that faculty members really didn't attend professional development opportunities that they had worked so hard to put together. With the start of the new academic year just ahead of us (at least

ID finds a Monkey paw and a Djinn lamp, what happens next will shock you!

Maybe I shouldn't take the bait, but I guess I couldn't leave this one alone either πŸ˜‚.  I might as well have a little fun with a clickbait-style title for this post 🀣. Reading IHE and JK feels like it's bad for my mental health. Anyway, instead of rage-writing, I thought I would expand a bit on his arguments.  JK, over at IHE is opining again about things. This time it's a reaction

Who moved my cheese?

I was reading Twitter the other daaayyy (just picture someone from Letterkenny saying this😜) and I came upon yet another discussion that basically boiled down to online (or remote) versus face-to-face. I made the mistake of reading the repliesπŸ™„.  On the one hand, I was hoping that there would be a more nuanced discussion (and to be fair, I did get those types of replies from people

Wicked Smaht: ID PD as a branching path and not a ladder

It's a Boston thing...Alright, this blog post has been sitting in my drafts for a while, since I am procrastinating writing that paper on video game preservation (a story for another blog), why no blog?πŸ˜‚.Now that the dissertation is done, and the doctoral degree is completed, I've been spending a little more time observing the ID-sphere on Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter and I have seen a fair number

A more hospitable airport lounge?

Airport Lounge (looks inviting, yet it's temporary)I'm back, baby! (just picture me as Frank Constanza from Seinfeld πŸ˜‚)OK, dissertation done(ish)  [just waiting for final approvals], and oral defense passed.  So, I guess I have some more free time to blog, and MOOC [if a MOOC were to become available πŸ˜‰].  It's been a rather...interesting 18 months.  I've been wanting to work

And just like that, it's fall! (or Autumn, same deal)

It's hard to believe, but the summer is in the rearview mirror.  Next week the fall semester begins and as I look back over the summer  I see some things I learned (or observed) in these coronatimes:The FoMo is still strong!I thought I had beaten back FoMo (fear of missing out) but I guess not :-).  This summer many conferences made the switch to online this summer due to the ongoing

HyFlex is not what we need (for Fall 2020)

HyFlex (Hybrid Flexible) is a way of designing courses for (what I call) ultimate flexibility.  It takes both ends of the teaching spectrum, fully face-to-face, and fully online-asynchronous and it bridges the gap.  Back in the day, I learned about this model of course design by taking an OLC workshop with Brian himself, but you can learn more about the model in his free ebook.  I liked

Hey! This isn't what I signed up for!

In my last blog post I was responding to the academy that isn't - or, perhaps, as some comments indicated, the academy that never actually was.  This past week I was at MIT's LINC conference.  It was a good opportunity to attend (since it was local), listen into some interesting panel discussions, and meet some folks from all over the world doing interesting things.  It was also a good

What am I training for again?

From PhD ComicsIt's been a while since I've had the bandwidth to think about something other than my dissertation proposal.  When I started this process four years ago (starting with matriculation in March 2014) I thought I'd be the first or second person in my cohort to be done (ha!), but like most marathoners I guess I am part of the pack looking at the fast folks ahead of me 😏.  Being
